Kansas City Hereford House destroyed

The 51 year old KC steak house, Hereford House, exploded and burned on Sunday night. Estimatess of damage are over one million dollars, but the police are still controling the site. Not even the owner has been allowed in. AQ national response team with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is due in today.

Although I never once had a positive experience at the Hereford House, I hate to see this happen.

They still have suburban locations in Independence, MO and Johnson County Kansas.

Thanks for the news Sfreader. Sorry to hear about this. I have only been to the Hereford House once and that was almost a decade ago, but I liked the place. It should be interesting to see what caused the explosion.

I've only been to KC once in my life about 10 years ago. I ate at Winstead's, Arthur Bryant's and the Hereford House. I liekd all of them but I thought that the Hereford House was the highlight. Not only was the steak goo dbut I remember the potato dish I got was huge and wonderful though I honestly can't remember if they were just fried or au gratin. I think they were au gratin. Anyways, I have always hoped to get back there. A shame for sure.

Just looking at the video (no audio), it really does not look like that big of a fire. No collapsing, no walls blown out, no smoke lapping, no broken windows, no huge debris pile out front.

Of course without seeing the inside or the rear of the building,it did not look bad.

That is a shame. I went there once and quite liked it (shot of Johnnie Walker Blue for less than 20 bucks!!--big deal for a guy from the coast).

    Plus the steak was great.

I happened to drive by the Hereford House Monday on my way home from my mother's house and was amazed. I had only heard on the local news that there was a fire. It was certainly more than a fire. The place was gutted! Tonight it was announced it was definitely arson. If they are able to open without razing the entire building, I'll be surprised.

Hatteras04, The potatoes you might be thinking about are ranch potatoes. They mixed dry ranch salad dressing mix with cream and baked the potatoes in it.

I had to eat at the Hereford House 10 years ago for a family function. I had cognac for dessert. After all that meat and cognac I was hurting the next day. That is my only memory of the Hereford House.

I feel for the employees who lost their employment during these already hard economic times.

I am not surprised the fire was ruled arson, I am saddened that someone would purposely do such a thing though.

I hope that this is not a trend developing!!!

These things happen in 3s so hopefully the trend will end at 3. (Hereford House - Breitbach's - ?????)

Here in the Windy City we call this phemomenon "Greek Fire". It seems whenever business gets bad ... restuarants seem to start themselves on fire. It is not a good idea, as it is pretty easy to trace the point of origin and cause of most fires. And if anyone gets hurt, you best believe the charges will put someone away for a long, long time!

FC, I'm not sure business was so bad. In KC, as in Chicago, it isn't always the owners but their enemies that you have to look out for.

It was arson according to the Kansas City Star - a former HH employee told me Saturday that that ATF is talking to all of the Herefored House's employees who had been fired in the past 3 years.

I took my father to the Independence restaurant last year for his 83rd birthday. We had a lousy meal. Years ago, when I lived in the KC area, I always thought the original Hereford House was overrated. But our meal in Independence was just abysmal. Overpriced; tough steaks; puny, iceburg-lettuce salads; and so on.

We had a facility in KC and I visited it pretty often. I would always take the leadership of the facility to the Hereford House. Personally, I always enjoyed it. As I recall, when you entered the restaurant, you could observe them grilling the steaks. It has been a few years since I was in the downtown location but I recall it was huge.

Its quality may have diminished but when I was there, I always thought it was very good.

Although I didn't have much experience with good meals at Hereford House, I hated to see them go this way. My Fav KC Steakhouse was the Golden Ox.
I understand that there were multiple bomb threats to several businesses on that block the day of the blast.
