Kansas' most memorable restaurant

Frannie's in Yates Center, Kansas is the most unusual restaurant I have found.

I've wanted to stop there, since learning of Frannie's last fall, but had to wait until going down to Tulsa last week, because it is only open for week day lunch.

This isn't a Mom & Pop operation, it is a Grandma operation. One person in her 70s, serving 150 meals a day. At $1 a meal. Frannie's is a real treat.

Here are my photos and report: http://www.kansastravel.org/frannies.htm

Now that is a real gem. I'm sure people {most} must leave more than a buck for the meal, I hope they do anyway. Chow Jim

This place looks amazing and a potential Roadfood classic. I am going to be in the area in a few weeks and hopefully I can make it to a meal here. I have no idea how she could possibly charge those prices, unless people actually did leave extra money.

Yates Center is in the central portion of southeast Kansas, about 50 miles east of El Dorado.

buffetbuster, although the bill would have been about $2.15, I left a $5 bill. I am guessing that the average is between $3 and 4, with some leaving the bare minimum.

Frannie says she keeps costs down by shopping carefully and using all that she buys.

I read that she also provides the meals served the nearby county jail. Lucky fellons!

Visiting Frannie's, I found a sign on the door "Closed until further notice, due to a fall & broken shoulder."

I contacted the local Chamber of Commerce. They last spoke to Frannie two weeks ago. She plans to reopen, at that time she hoped to do so in about 2 months, so that would be mid-November. Though that could be overly optimistic.

Cards may be sent to her at Frannie Miller, 206 E. Wilson, Yates
    Center, Kansas 66783.

Sorry to hear about Frannie. Hopefully she recovers quickly and can reopen soon. Unfortunately, I had to cancel my trip last year, so I didn't make it there, although I definitely will next time I am in the area.

Thanks for the address. I will send her a card.

I called the Yates Center Chamber of Commerce today. The lady there said that Frannie is not healing very fast and may never reopen.

    Thats a darn shame.

That is a real shame! That was definitely on my "must visit" list the next time I was going to be in Kansas. But, at her age, she deserves to just rest and heal, so I wish Frannie the best.

I just spoke with the lady at the Chamber of Commerce again. Frannie is healing, but she will not be reopening the restaurant.

It feels like the end of an era.

Thanks for the update. Too bad, I was really looking forward to visiting the place.

Keith, I am going to be in KC in a few weeks. Any chance you would want to get together for a meal? If so, drop me an email through Roadfood.
