Kentucky: East of I-75

Planning a January trip to Eastern Kentucky and will be doing a lot of touring east of 75 for business.

Definitely going to Opal's in McKee for the best country ham I've ever eaten in a restaurant.

Burger Boy in London Kentucky still puts out world class fried chicken so I've penned in a visit there as well.

While the Fad Pool Hall is shuttered in Corbin, I'll still be eating my body weight in chili buns at Conley Drive In in nearby Middlesboro.

Can't wait to get pluperfect biscuits at the Marathon Gas Station in Gray Kentucky.

But I'm looking for other spots as well.

Where are y'all getting your roadfood fix east of I-75 in the great state of Kentucky?

Go to Hall's at Winchester, KY.  Good food.  The Parkette Drive In at Lexington, KY was on Diners, Drive In's and Dives.  They have good comfort food.

    Hall's on the River @ 1225 Athens - Boonesboro Rd., Winchester, KY. 859 - 527 - 6620.

Hall's used to be a great place to get a platter of fried catfish and a vat of beer cheese but the last couple visits found the glory to be sadly gone.

There's lots of good eating to be done in Kentucky these days but Hall's is no longer on the roster.

I'm really sorry to hear that. It's been 2 or 3 years since I've eaten there, but when I did, I thoroughly enjoyed the Hot Brown and the fried mushroom appetizer.   And my husband and brother loved the beer-cheese soup.

Their Hot Brown is still pretty good, but overall, the whole operation has slipped in the last few years.  To me, their biggest problem is consistency.  We still go there occasionally because I'm always hopeful that I'll see a glimmer of the old place that I enjoyed in my college days over forty years ago.  I can sit there, close my eyes, and see Mrs. Hall and the old Weimaraner walk around and visit each table.

If you find yourself in Estill County, Michael's in Ravenna has a pretty good buffet.

I finally remembered something from Eastern Kentucky,  Miguels Pizza in Slade. Unfortunately they are usually closed in the winter, but you should hit it up if you are in the Red River Gorge.
