Kentucky Que

Posted this originally on another thread, but it got me thinking that maybe it should go out on its own. Except for the barbeque mutton mecca of Owensboro, haven't heard of too many other great Q joints in KY--at least not by comparison to NC, TN, GA, etc. If any of you Kentucky RF-ers reading this know of some really good Q recommendations (other than chains) elsewhere in KY please bring it on. QFan Bonita Springs, FL Sure! I went to the Ol Hickory Pit in Louisville. They actually had Mutton on the menu. I thought it was good, but not nearly has good as Moonlite or George's in Owensboro. I also went to a "local" chain in Louisville called Mark's Feed Store. I tried their burgoo, it was definetely different than the burgoo I sampled in Owensboro, it was very thick and almost had a "mustardy" taste to it, but I still thought it was good.

Jucey's BBQ on the east side of Louisville (outside the Gene Snyder on 146, Is a real downhome ramshakle type of place. A wood-burner, it puts out some good Que. There are several places around the Henderson and points west area.(Names fail me when I need them!)

Ole South BBQ, near Hopkinsville, has its ups 'n downs, but is worth a shot if you're driving by around lunchtime. It's on 41 between Hoptown and Fort Campbell.

boyz i'll tell ya' i've been to moonlite in owensboro it was a nice restaurant, with good sides and deserts i was not impressed by any of the meats in fairness i had the buffet, maybe that was the difference... my favorite bbq here in ky is billy's in lexington it is weastern ky style, and the mutton is chopped the sauce is prfect with mutton and pretty darn good on all else i'm guessing tho that it was formulated for mutton we don't seem to have a q tradition in central or eastern ky one of these days i'd like to do a q tour of backwater joints way out there in western ky mutton

Having some memory flashes here. I seem to remember several years ago while on a driving trip to Kentucky Lake that there was some VERY good Que around Kuttawa, Paducah and other towns in the W KY area. Can any of you RF-ers confirm this or come up with some names and locations? QFan Bonita Springs, FL

QFan, If you are going to be in Western Kentucky, plan a trip to Waverly KY and stop in at Peak Bros. They make a chipped mutton that I think is better than anything in Owensboro. I lived all over KY throughout the 70's and 80's (I now live in the culinary wasteland of N. Minnesota LOL). I go back every chance I get on mutton runs. Hope this helps, Rex

Dearfolk, There are a couple of very good Q places in Bowling Green. One is on U. S. 62 heading west; the other is on U. S. 31 north of town. Neither of these places does mutton (nobody wants it in B. G.!), but the Westside one has burgoo, and both have that wonderful flat, cooked-on-the-grill cornbread that is ubiquitous farther south in Tennessee. When I manage to uncover the names to fit the places, I'll report back. Until then, I haven't a 'cue... er, clue. Nowhere Near As Lost As Lost River Cave, Ort. Carlton in Lovely, Enticing Athens, Georgia.

There are a number of places to consider. In Lake City, next to the Barkley Lake dam, is an excellent place called Knoth's. In Owensboro, stay away from Moonlite if you want the real stuff. The word is they parboil the meat - a definite no no. Try George's or better yet Old Hickory on Washington. Outside Hopkinsville, actually closer to Cadiz, try Knockemhill BBQ, only open Thursday through Saturday - really excellent. You'll have to ask locals how to find it since it is in the middle of nowhere.
