Hello All, The diversity of opinions are wonderful!! I prefer my dogs plain, though at times like kraut on them. And like DLnWPBrown, I love a cold Dr. Pepper to meld with the flavour of the bun and dog. Take Care, Fieldthistle

Mustard on Hotdogs Ketchup on burgers That's the rules. (And it's ketchup, not catsup.) That ought to stir the pot up.

Hello all , My wife loves ketchup on her dogs , while I cannot stand it on anything except hamburgers occasionaly and fries. My preference though is a nice chili dog with a bit of a kick . Have added coleslaw a few times at Coney Island Rest. in Middletown NY at our dog meets and never get funny looks from the gang. Benzee

My family enjoys the cheap dawgs, (strange people they are), so I have to doctor a dawg with CATSUP, mustard. When I splurge and buy the good stuff, I dress them with onions, relish, cheese, a spicy mustard or a good stone ground. My Grandfather while he was alive would raid the fridge every night before bed time and eat 2 hot dawgs straight from the fridge, no nothing on them cold from the pack. I still find myself doing that on occaision, reaching into the fridge and pulling out a cold dawg to nibble on.

My dad used to do that (Along with the Vienna Sausages), as well as did I, until I got a little older, and realized that they- both the cheap hot dogs and Vienna Sausages- tasted awful. It's the same thing as the snack my grandpa used to make that I loved as a kid- graham crackers with bananas and Colby cheese. I'd eat them like there was no tomorrow. Recently, I remembered them and excitedly recalled the snack to my wife, who promptly said- Yuck, that sounds gross! After trying them as an adult, unfortunately, I have to agree with her-YUCK! It's amazing what we thought was good as kids!

I never heard of putting cream cheese on a hot dog. Do you use the whipped type or firmer type? Is it usually just cream cheese and the dog or do you put more things on it?

My wife and I were shopping the other day, and came across Vienna sausages. I almost bought some, for the nostagia alone. I'm sure they'd be better than the canned sardines I used to eat with my dad! That ended when I asked for a can at the store, brought them home, and didn't like them. Dad made me sit at the table until I finished them. Never again!!

I guess, for me, it depends on what type of hot dog I eat as to what I put on it.If its a cheap hot dog I usually put ketchup and mustard on it.But a good Vienna or Hebrew National doesnt ever get ketchup. But lots of mustard, sport peppers, onions, etc. And I love sardines on saltines!!!

anybody else put chili sauce, i think bennets brand ,is best on their hot dogs? That and dejon , spicy brown or horseradish mustard. Bennets at one time was made in baltimore. It's worth the 60-cents more a glass bottle than store brand. i make-up my hot dogs this way all the time.

My mother was the same way...She didn't like sardines, anchovies,or caviar. She did, however, love mullet roe. But,I think that was because the mullet roe didn't have a stong flavor like the sardines, anchovies,or the caviar.Daddy and I made up for Mama's dislike of sardines by eating a ton of them!

ooh, I love sardines too. My dad used to chop up some lettuce and tomato and cut up the sardines all nice and neat for me and I'd eat it with crackers. I miss my dad doing stuff like that for me. As for ketchup/catsup I see absolutely nothing wrong with putting it on anything, but I'm also a mayo-on-hotdog kind of gal, too. In a news article i read sometime last year they were talking about the do's and don'ts of etiquette regarding barbecues and one said: Do not put ketchup on a hot dog unless you're under 12. Whatever!!! I can't stand articles like that or the Miss Manners advice column!

My wife and I went into Wendy's once. She ordered a single, ketchup only. I ordered a single, everything but ketchup. The girl that waited on us said "Y'all are married, ain't ya?" The best hotdogs come from Roast Grill in downtown raleigh. Note that they do not have ketchup available. The recommended drink is a coke in a glass bottle. http://www.roastgrill.com/ <--noise warning

Hot Dogs - mustard, onions, chili, cheese (NO cheez whiz either, real shredded cheese of the chedar or colby varities only) Banished from dogs: ketchup kraut - oh awful stuff

I sometimes put ketchup on a hot dog.... then sprinkle it with curry powder. I learned that when I was in Belgium many years ago. Their ketchup had a stronger flavor than any I've seen in the states. And mayo on frites was the bomb.

Originally posted by rebeltruce There is a famous, well at least in Lewistown, Pa. they are famous, hotdog shop called Laskaris's. 90% OF THE CHILI DOGS IN N.E. PA. HAVING SAID THAT, I CAN PUT KETCHUP AND MUSTARD ON MY DOGS OCCASIONALLY.

I would've never guessed that so many people felt strongly about ketchup/no ketchup on their dawg. Personally, I've used ketchup since way back when, but I also admit that I've grown more fond of mustard with each passing year - so there could be something to the Under 35/Over 35 argument. Then again, I've been known to put bbq sauce on my dawg sometimes, so...

It isn't always an age thing, because I am under 35 and don't like anything on my hot dog, except once I had fries on the dog. Although, once when watching a show on hot dogs on the travel channel, the people who owned the hot dog places that the guy visited kept telling him that it was against the rules to use ketchup unless under 17.
