Ketchup on a hot dog
Wed, 03/28/07 6:54 PM
( permalink)
Why is there such a controversy with this subject. I never had ketchup on a hot dog before last weekend. I went to a local place and they made me a vienna beef dog with yellow mustard, raw onions, relish, and ketchup. I tell you what, it was damn good. I also had a "Chicago" style dog, all the way, with melted cheeze wiz on top and that was damn good also.

At home I always eat my hot dogs with ketchup. The ketchup's homemade, though. I don't eat hot dogs out that much, although I was in New York last weekend and had a couple dogs and a papaya drink at Gray's Papaya because it was late and I was starving. Good dogs, AWFUL buns, and an entertaining stoned person. I love New York.

If you use "search," you'll discover that "ketchup" and "Chicago style dogs" have been extensively discussed and reviewed. Start with "Ketchup on a hot dog, why not?" Visit http://www.superdawg.com/faqs_content.cfm?hasflash=1 Go to: Why is ketchup not included on a Superdawg with everything. You'll find that many people under 35 like ketchup on their hot dogs. Just as many people under 35 have difficulty watching black and white movies. Call it changing tastes and the Pageant of Time. The Bear

In my limited experience, if a hot dog "needs" ketchup, it is an inferior hot dog to begin with. I used to put ketchup on hot dogs, when we'd buy the standard fare- B*llp*rk, etc, and it was very rare that I'd eat hot dogs then. Since discovering much better dogs, such as Five Star and Usinger's (Thanks to this forum) I've never used ketchup, and have never missed it! So- it's either a matter of taste, or a matter of the quality of the dog to begin with.

Fact is more people have ketchup on a dog, then those that don't.. I rarely use it myself, but have no problem if there's a thin strip thrown on it. Nothing more then a pureed tomato with a few spices tossed in.

The best hot dog I can ever recall eating was on a hayride as a teen. It was a plain blackened hot dog on white bread with a streak of ketchup on it. This incredible gourmet's delight was handed me by a certain Preacher's daughter I was head over heels in love with at the time.

In the end we are purists. Pure to our own tastes. Do I put ketchup on a hotdog? Sure but I also eat them with relish, onions and chili. Come to think of it isn't chili a derivitive of a tomato, pretty much where ketchup comes from. I also eat corned beef and cabbage, sometimes with vinegar and sometimes with butter on the vegetables. I eat french fries sometimes with ketchup and sometimes with malt vinegar. Pork chop sandwiches sometimes with mayo and fried onions and sometimes with mustard. You get the idea. There is one rule that I will never, ever break: Pastrami and corned beef sandwichs must be served with mustard. That's just me. BB

I've gotta agree with Uncle Vic...my customers use more ketchup than any other condiment. Except maybe cheese...or jalepenos, and maybe grilled onions, and of course the cream cheese. But aside from that, and well, the spicy mustard, I go through a lot of ketchup. Thank god this is America and we can eat our dogs any damn way we please.

I've never had ketchup on anything, hot dogs, hamburgers, fries, etc. It's my kryptonite. However, my kids love it, supplementing the 35 and under theory.

I sell Vienna Beef hot dogs & Polish for a living. My customers dress their own hot dogs. I supply all the original Chipico (Vienna Beef) condiments, including mustard and ketchup. Once they pay, it's theirs to dress. In my business, ketchup is preferred over mustard by 2 to 1. I'm a traditional Chicago baby boomer, where mustard rules. I've never had ketchup on a hot dog, however, if you buy a dog from me, use as much of what ever you want to dress it. CSD

I'm 22, and it's only mustard for me. I used to like only ketchup as a kid, but I also thought Ballpark and Oscar Meyer made good hot dogs back then too.

It's one of those things like beans or tomatoes in chili. No one really cares what the answer is; the only thing that's important is that it's fun to argue about. Tom

There is a famous, well at least in Lewistown, Pa. they are famous, hotdog shop called Laskaris's. Haven't been there in years, but I know they are still there. Not sure about the brand of dog used, but the buns are steamed, the dogs grilled on a grill that's been there for well over 50 years, they come with mustard, meat sauce, and raw onion. These are the only dogs I put a bit of ketchup on, it just tastes good with the mustard, sauce and onions. Other then that I never use ketchup on a hotdog, but I don't see a problem with using it.

While I would prefer to have chili & cheese or sauerkraut & mustard on a hot dog, I occasionally like ketchup and relish.
