King's cooks their pork in electric ovens and "finishes" it over wood coals. Same technique is used at both locations. Nice, tart sauce with a bite that compliments the meat. Not bad, but not really barbecue. I'll still stop for a sandwich or burger and some hot onion rings. Breakfast at King's is really, really good.

Dearfolk, I first found King's when I left the interstate route to drive through Petersburg in 1979. To my knowledge, it's still just as good now as it was then, and it had been open 30+ years before I ever got there. At one time I would have considered it the northernmost outpost of real Southern BBQ, but now I would imagine that Allman's in Fredericksburg has that honor. And to think that I have yet to visit Allman's! Let us hear what y'all think of King's. And - by the way - I'm aware of the old, original location on U. S. 460 out in the west end of Petersburg; where is the second one? As If On 'Cue, Ort. Carlton in Seasonably Cool Athens, Georgia.

After it finishes cooking they transport it to the old open pit where they continue smoking it with larger sticks of oak wood. The King's on Crater, Rd. in Petersburg is the only open location left (Open only for lunch and dinner). Still owned by the original King family that started the business in the mid 1940's.

I haven't been to King's BBQ since 2001, but it did not impress me very much then. If I am in the area again, I would like to give them another try, but I would not go out of my way to eat here.
