Don't have standard height work spaces. No one is standard height. I'm several inches above "usual" and break my back when I spend long periods chopping, etc.

Watch where you put the windows unless you are completely dressed when you go make the coffee.

We renovated an old (1934-built) house 12 years ago, and built a new kitchen from scratch in a different part of the house.
The best money we spent was for granite counter-tops.
The worst value was for a SUB-ZERO refrigerator.
We cook & eat with friends a lot, so the kitchen is where we spend a lot of time. We made a big eat-in kitchen with a center peninsula (not an island), and cut a large opening through the shared wall with the living room so everyone can be "together".
We usually have 30-plus for Thanksgiving, and although it's not that big a house, we don't feel crowded. If you are considering doing any work, think more about how you live than about what you want.

I renovated my kitchen about 5 years ago (it's a 55-year old Levittown-style place and the last kitchen redo looked to be the '80s). I ripped out the wall closing it off from the dining room (the kitchen is the main social center for me) and enjoyed the archaeology of multiple layers of flooring, old pipe access holes, and vintage newspapers stuffed into cavities. I also punched out a bay extension in the dining room which yielded a lot of space, physical and psychological.

I did as much work as I could myself to afford pro work in areas I fear to tread, like electricity and plumbing - and to buy pricey things like a Jenn-Air downdraft oven, needed since no matter how I parsed it, the oven was gonna be under a window. It's all been working nicely.

I will be remodeling our kitchen soon. 24 years ago I designed and built our house and the kitchen. I was so precise with the kitchen design that I am having a hard time changing the basic layout. One problem I have is it is a heavy timber frame house and I cannot knock out walls or change the physical space. Since it wasn't so bad in the first place I may just gut it and put it back in the same layout with minor modifications. Materials and appliances will all be upgraded significantly from the original when I had run out of money trying to finish the house.

I have designed kitchens professionally for over 50 years
and gave classes in Kitchen Design for 14 of those 50.
Designed for clients all over the USA and as far away as
Saudi Arabia. In 1970 in one of the classes I coined the
phrase "tear down this wall" which was later used by
President Ronald Reagan --- I meant the one between the
kitchen and dining room or whatever---he meant the one in
Berlin. I got no credit though, nor even a thank you note.

I design practical kitchens for people who love to, or just
have to cook. It has been fun and a wonderful 50 years.
And I am still doing it because it is great !!!!!
