I used the search function and see that this item, Knockwurst has never been discussed in length here. I'm not a big hot dog fan but I do enjoy knockwurst steamed in beer on occasion. Served with baked beans, cole slaw, and homemade rye bread a meal that brings back Satuday night memmories. I can go to the supermarket and find a sea of different hot dogs but only 2 brands of knockwurst. Even the deli cases here no longer carry them. I used to enjoy them split and grilled over live coals for a snack while the chicken was grilling. What is your favorite way to prepare? And what is your favorite brand? Chow Jim

I make knockwurst the way they used to serve it at a German festivals out on Long Island back in the 50's and 60's. I simply heat it in water (a dirty water knockwurst), and serve it with sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, and rye bread. The only knockwurst I have found with the same taste and texture is Thumann's. They are hard to find, I get them at Kings supermarkets in NJ. Local German butchers all sell knockwurst here in the NYC metro area.

I remember eating knockwurst as a child (my dad--from NYC--called them "specials." A local name?). Anyway, I don't see them much in the supermarkets in southern CT much. Don't they taste pretty much like hot dogs? For example, a Hebrew National knockwurst would be a fat HN hot dog with the same flavor. Yes?

The good knockwurst around here have a different flavor profile than the same producer's frankfurters. You are correct about Hebrew National; their flavor was either identical or very close to their frankfurters.

Hebrew National knockwurst, also called specials, are not only thicker but have more spice than their regular franks. I believe this is true of most knockwurts.

Hello all , I love knockwursts . My german grandmother used to mnake it for me in the morning when she stayed up from the city . I used to take her to an old german butcher that was located on Jerome Ave in the Bronx up until about mid 90's than the place closed . Her morning recipe was " wurst " sliced thin , raw onions and some oil and vinegar . She made it the night before , covered it up and wammo , you had a great breakfast the next morn. What was great is you could have it for any meal . Find a good german butcher and you will find your knockwursts Benzee

I love knockwurst. Fortunately I live near a German meat store where they make it fresh. Delicious. It's Noacks in Meriden. They make all of their own sausage, wursts, cold cuts, hot dogs, kielbasa etc. Great German potato salad and meat salad. We usually just boil them and have them with potato salad and kraut and mustard. The flavor is a bit different than hot dogs if it's made right.

When I have, it's been at a beer festival where, unlike a hot dog, I didn't bother to seek out the brand. I'd say that Hebrew National is good for a brand that's probably available where you are. Most anything at a good German or German/Polish butcher would be good.

I always keep a few knock wurst on hand because, we have a local Polish Meat store, who carries quality meats of all description.(But mostly pork products). I treat Knock wurst like a super dog. Also good with beans, Kraut and potatoes.
