Looking for good local restaurants in the Knoxville, TN area. No chain restaurants, just fresh local flavor.

I can personally recommend Calhoun's. I go to Knoxville on occasion for my job, and I make it a point on every visit to go to Calhoun's for barbeque. Very good pork ribs and sides. If you're a dessert eater, try the strawberry shortcake if they have it. It's delicious, and they give you enough to share it with someone else. Here is a link to Calhoun's website.

Since many of the suggestions are not of the roadfood variety I'll continue in that vein and suggest Aubrey's. Nice diverse menu, food is excellent, and location in Farragut, Powell, Maryville. moderately priced. Can't go wrong here and great atmosphere.

I had breakfast yesterday at The Amber restaurant on Broadway. There are 2 of these, one in Halls (on Broadway) and one much closer to Knoxville also on Broadway @ I-640.
Looks like a good roadfood type place. The usual fare of sandwiches, salads, etc. breakfast menu was satisfactory but not some things I would have expected like grits.
Maybe it was just the day. The food was really good & tasty, but the service was extremely slow. I will go back again and try it though.

GF talks all the time about Big Ed’s Pizza in Oak Ridge. She's been there and done that many times, and I have even seen the T-Shirt!

Littons is very good, but frankly, I was disappointed in the Thunder Road burger that J&M make a point of mentioning in their review. However, don't pass up the Italian cream cake, one of my favorite iterations of that dessert.

Don't miss out on Big Ed's for Atmosphere! Just be prepared to wait in line for a table on Fri. and Sat. nights! They are closed on Sunday! Thanks Olphart for mentioning it! Big Ed's is located in the historic Jackson Square Area in Oak Ridge, Tn.! Worth the Short drive from Knoxville!

Boy, It seems that we have a good sized delegation in the Knoxville (TN) area. Maybe we ought to think about a Calhoun's evening or something like that.

Litton's, O'Charley's, or I'll even suggest another, Smokey's BBQ & Deli on Middlebrook & Liberty.

For sentimental reasons and late nite craves it's Gus's on campus.
Love the fries and the hot steamed sandwiches!

                                  Sundancer sez:
Italian: Louis's which has the best spaghetti in Knoxville and real good veal parma, lasagna and pizza.

                                  4661 Old Broadway 865-688-4121

Mexican: El Charro which has great Chimi's. Voted Knoxville's best since 1982. They have three locations but the best is on top of Bearden hill

                                  6701 Kingston Pike 865-584-9807

Chinese: Mandarin House which was voted best buffet since 1995. I really like their General Tsao. They keep the buffet fresh. Everything is good.
They have 5 locations but the one I like the best is:

                                  314 Merchants Road 865-689-4800

Cafeteria: S & S Cafeteria. I like everything here. They keep it fresh and very seldom keep a lot of anything out so that is does not get stale. You can see what you like and the price is right. Real good veggies.

                                  4808 Kingston Pike 865-584-5191

All of the above locations are close to interstate and the Sundancer can personally attest to the quality and taste. Let me know if you try them.

Altruda's for italian, the food is great. You have to love a place where you brag not only on the food but the salad and garlic rolls.

Hey Knoxville, I drove by Smokey's BBQ this morning and it certainly had the look of being out of business. Insides looked empty. So sad.

There is a place in my neighborhood called Ray's Rib Shack that I intend to check out but have not been to yet.
