Koegel's hot dogs Fri, 01/13/06 2:12 PM (permalink)
Hi Yall,
Im from Texas but love hot dogs from up north. I read several posts from folks who liked Koegel's dogs. But, they make several kinds. What kind is the best? Or, any other good northern hot dogs.

    Hi Joe,
Welcome to the board. Koegels are fantastic. They are made in Flint Michigan. The flagship hot dog is called a Koegels Vienna. They are Pork and beef mix, and come in a natural casing. The natural casing snaps when you bite into them. They are fantastic. I also love Bests Kosher, as well as Vienna Beef hot dogs. I saw your from Texas. I went to a barbeque place in Houston called the Goode Company. The best Brisket I have ever eaten in my life. That is what I miss most about living up here in Indiana, decent barbeque. Here they slap a mound of old pulled pork on your plate, throw some watered down ketchup on it, and advertise it as' "authentic Texas barbecue". Mercy!

Thanks for the welcome myway. This forum is awsome! I got lost for hours on my 1st visit. And thanks for the info. Wow Unclw Vic, neat that you got that picture here so fast! I went to the website and there are lots of neat sounding products. They are not selling online right now but I did find a place that is.

        www.pinconningcheese.com

They sell a 5lb. box that comes with a can on coney sauce for $32.99. Sounds reasonable enough. And I might try some of their cheese also.

About the Brisket myway, yep Texas has the best. My friend that lives near Memphis make me bring him some when I visit. He doesen't like the pork BBQ they make there. Sadlers makes a good Brisket that comes frozen. They sell it at the Wallmarts near Dallas. I keep a pack in my freezer. Easy to heat up. Kraft makes a good hickory smoked BBQ sauce that goes good with it.

Thanks again! I am going to order some of those dogs. Oh, what are yalls fav toppings?

          Hey Papa,
On the Koegels site there is a recipe for a coney sauce that uses two cups of coffee as one of the ingredients. It is fantastic. It goes great with the koegels! I recommend it. Coney sauce with onions and cheese. I know the two cups of coffee sounds unbelievable, but I swear by it. Give it a try. When you first make the liquid portion, the whole house has a smell that will make your mouth water. It is wonderful. My wife even likes it, and she is not a hot dog fan. Let me know how you like it. As far as the kosher beef hot dogs go, my favorite is the chicago dog, as well as a Rueben dog. The rueben has a poppy seed bun, with a bests kosher dog, with thousand island dressing, a strip of melted swiss cheese, and a healthy dose of deli style sauerkraut. Man I'm gewtting hungry typing this!
