Krispy Kreme: Yay or Nay?

It seems like everyone has an opinion one way or another about Krispy Kreme donuts. Are you a fan? Why or why not?
Personally, I'm a fairly big fan, though at least part of this is due to the nearest location being an hour away. I prefer their texture over cake donuts. But they still can't compare to homemade donuts that are light and airy like the Krispy Kreme style, except with less of a sickly sweet coating like the Krispy Kremes.

Far too sweet for me.

I like them hot from the fryer.....I've only bought them in the box once, not bad but not as good as fresh from the fryer.

So I only have them when I am close enough to a Krispy Kreme shop to get them fresh, keeps them special that way. Once or twice a year is all I can stand these days anyway, way to much sugar!

Yep, too sweet, take all that sugar off and it might be ok.  I like the cake doughnuts better.

I have had yeast doughnuts from different places that didn't overdo the glazing that were better.

I, too find them way too sweet. I also dont particularly like( or lack thereof)the variety they offer.Quick story-we are Harley riders, and on many occasion on a warm summer night we would stop in Krispy Kreme for water, coffee and donuts.We would sit near our bikes and eat and talk.Well the security didnt like us there, and called the police.We werent doing anything but what I said( we are in our upper 40s) but apparently somebody had a preconceived notion about Harley riders.We have not been back since.

A hot KK glazed is euphoric.  I have seen the day that could (and did) eat a full dozen at one sitting.  Oh to be in high school again! 

Yes, they're sweet...but good 'ol country folk ain't afraid of sugar (or salt).

JayL-I agree about the sugar and salt used in the south! Love my N.C. relatives, but just cant abide by the sugar!Love the salt, though!

Nay......to Krispy Kreme.  I'll take Dunkin Donuts anyday..

I grew up eating KK and will die eating KK   I just don't eat them very often is all.

Its not like We eat them everyday  Sheesh!

For me they are a nice "once in a great while" treat - I actually don't like them really hot, I prefer them about an hour old....still nice and squishy, but the glaze is set and not drippy.  Overall, though, I prefer a nice cake donut over Krispy Kreme.

I'm not much of a donut fan to begin with, but I very much disliked the Krispy Kreme I tried. Of course, I started off prejudiced against them because they can't spell.

I don't do Kountry Kitchens, either.

It is one of the absolute best ways to make one's butt several sizes wider, while simultaneously elevating both your Serum Cholesterol and your Triglycerides, and making you more prone to Type II Diabetes! 

 
 

So it is a good thing for me that the ones close to me are closed. I used to be able to get them 3 or 4 times a year, on the way to/from Providence airport. I don't even know where to buy fresh ones anymore. The boxed ones that I sometimes see at highway gas stations are not worth the the negatives mentioned above. If a KK opened in my hometown, though, I'd be Type II in about a month

 Yay to KK for me too, although eliminating the trans- fat changed them a little.

KrispyKremes , even those rarely found fresh from the fryer are a one-dimensional food. The first one is great, the second pretty good, the third starts to get boring. 
Fifteen years ago KrispyKreme was unknown in the Northeast.  

Five years ago you couldn't walk two blocks in any Northeastern city without finding a Krispy Kreme  shop - now they're all  closed and unlamented.

When in the South, the true home of KrispyKreme, if I see a busy shop I'll stop and get a couple - that'll hold me 'till I get back again in another year.

And such should serve as the ultimate retort to this perennial "Yay of Nay" Krispy Kreme argument. As I previously attempted to say on this site here -- and having just visited the Richmond, Virginia outpost of this fine eatery yesterday -- I contend that to adequately address this issue, one must be well versed in the "funnel cake argument."
 

 
 
That being that funnel cakes are good. Many people like funnel cakes. And you can't beat a funnel cake when it's hot and plucked from the oil before being topped with confectionary sugar. 
 
But a funnel cake some 12+ hours old sufficating in a room temperature box, well, sucks.
 
Translation: Krispy Kreme doughnuts shall only be judged when you're in the same structure housing the magical river of cooking oil transporting these gifts from heaven and when their temperature in your mouth makes you forget, just for a moment, the amount of calories you're about to consume. 
 
 

But a microwaved for 10 seconds KK is damn tasty. A microwaved funnel cake is not.....*shrug*

Oh, My god! I  can't imagine trying to bring one of those hollow
cadavers back to life by zapping it in a microwave.

Please, just give it a decent burial in the garbage can...
