Krispy Kreme has closed near me :-(

To my shock and dismay, our local Krispy Kreme closed down a few weeks ago. http://www.nbc10.com/money/5690714/detail.html <--- story Apparently, these stores have not been doing very well and were under bankrupcy protection before they closed. It is a tragic day! How am I going to get my KK fix now?! Buying them from the grocery store just isn't the same. ~Jessica

The KK factory in my town is going strong too. It really is shame what the coporate big-wigs have done to the company.

DunkinDonut is the closest donut shop to my house but there are several KK's scattered around the city and when the timing is right during my travels a couple or 6 HOTS truely hit the spot.

I agree with the Sundancer. A hot, glazed, KK may be the best "affordable luxury" out there. The packaged ones at every grocery store and gas station are easy to pass by. Like Paul, I can't eat many due to the low carb thing. I don't know about Sundancer, bu when I do cheat, it will not be for a stale donut. Speaking of the stock, I would like to see a name list published of every huckster who pushed the KK stock a few years ago. I would also like to see on the same list, what those guys are flogging now.

The KKs around St. Louis all seem to be goldmines...Are usually very busy almost all the time, but there is no other major donut chain with a major presence in the area. But, they are really the only donut chain in the area, the rest are ma & pa places. Dunkin Donuts closed most of their locations in the area 15 years or so ago, as did Winchell's, & Mr. Donut., so that probably contributes to their success here.

KK are too sweet for my taste. There's enough non chain fresh doughnuts around here to keep me out of the chain stores. When did doughnut become donut? I must have missed something along the way. No doubt sometime after olicook fell out of favor.

By offering their product in grocery stores and even 7-11 type places they pretty much killed the golden goose because they were offering an inferior product when they did so. That turned a lot of people off because when they bought in these places they just ended up wondering what all the fuss was about, but at the same time it siphoned off business from the independent locations. Then there was the plain old scam aspect of the way the corporation (not the individual franchises) was run. In effect they weren't selling donuts, they were selling franchises and once the hype wore off the house of cards began to crumble. I doubt Krispy Kreme is dead as a product or as a brand. In their hot, fresh, right out of the fryer state the donuts are too good and too many people love them. The company will be resurrected but they may have to retrench quite a bit by closing outlets such as yours in order to restore their financial integrity.

KK is a Wiston Salem, NC based company and have been in Charlotte since before I was born. Almost a right of passage in NC to eat a dozen hot ones, for guys anyway. Two dozen would almost certainly result in heaves beyond belief, personal experience speaks here. My personal belief is that KK's must be learned at a franchise and then can be tolerated from other outlets. Even the fundraiser kids knocking on your door selling a dozen is ok (another NC thing). If someone's first taste is from a supermarket...they're going to think "what's the deal?" Supermarket KK's should get a fifteen second ride in the microwave. Two day old KK's get fed to the chickens around here. The new coffee glazed are really good right now.

What we have in So. Cal. are tons of Chinese run donut and coffee places where one can go for good donuts and plain old coffee that is super good and sans the trendiness. I never understood the KK mystic. What's the bid deal about a glazed donut? At my corner shop I can get apple fritters, cinnamon rolls, white coconut cake, chocolate bars, old fashioned, chocolate on chocolate cake with nuts and plain cake not to mention the glazed.

kk has all of that and more, but only at the kk stores. I have been eating kk glazed since I got out of three cornered pants and wouldn't even consider buying them unless the "hot donuts", actually it only says "hot", sign was on. My wife will slow down and risk a rear ender to see if the sign is on...not on...keep going, on!!...risk serious injury to get in the parking lot.

By offering their product in grocery stores and even 7-11 type places they pretty much killed the golden goose because they were offering an inferior product when they did so. It is plain to see you have no ideal of their concept. Every KK I have ever been to be a mini factory that sells to all of the grocery stores and even 7-11 type places in their market. Its part of their concept. Then there was the plain old scam aspect of the way the corporation (not the individual franchises) was run. In effect they weren't selling donuts, they were selling franchises and once the hype wore off the house of cards began to crumble. That’s what a franchisor does he sells franchisees. The market place over hyped the company and its franchisees that failed had way to many dreams of dollars in their minds. They built in new markets hoping to grow way to fast and many have been under capitalized for the venture.

The management went bad. Long time employees that cooked the books and will now be guests of the Feds for a long time for SEC violations. A hot KK glazed has a life expectancy of seconds when put in front of me...never a dozen again however.

Must be the fact that I'm a yank, but I find KK donuts the most disgusting things on this planet. Except for maybe raw shellfish. They tried to infiltrate this area and failed miserably. All of them but one have closed-they just couldn't compete with Dunkin' Donuts. A strange lot we yanks may be but KK donuts should be tossed in the harbor just like the Boston Tea Party.

The are only available at a KK retail location. They are, however, nasty if over an hour or so old. Dunkin's the same way IMO. Raw shellfish. Bad??? I guess that depends where they came from. Know your purveyor personally, I might add.

A KK right off the line is like heaven....... Luckily, I have a KK plant near me and can get them right off the purveyor belt, freshly glazed.

KK is a glazed piece of hot dough. Big deal. I prefer the cakey Dunkin Donut. It doesn't become a piece of lead in your stomach like a KK doughnut does. The South kan keep their Krispy Kreme for all I kare. Truth be told, I miss the many mom and pop places I grew up on in Syracuse, NY. DC does not have any comparable place. The best cake I 've had in DC is from Cake Love on U St. But, I've still not had a good doughnut from a local baker.

Well the nearest KK to me closed about a few months ago. It was already 4 miles away from my house. Now the nearest one is 9 miles away. If thats the case, I can go to the Dunkin donuts right around the corner from me in Detroit. Gas is too much to go 10 miles for some donuts. I stomach loves KK with all its guts, but my pocket doesn't.

There was a Krispy Kreme on Austin Hwy,but it closed, guess no business. There is one on Loop 1604 on the north side of San Antonio that is always packed, but I'm not sure about if there are any other stores here.Plus apparently Walmart here has some kind of contract with them becuase they sell KK here in their stores.

Just heard today that every single KK store in Arizona and New Mexico (I believe there are ten or eleven of them) have closed immediately. Seems that they are all owned by a single franchisee who has gone bankrupt. Inexcusably, the employees' last paychecks are apparently worthless.

yep saw the same story on tv. seems the central office raised the franchises fee to force out those that weren't making enough profit. dirty deal, canceling all those paychecks.

KK opened several locations here in the Boston area to great fanfare...and they all (except maybe one) closed up within a year or so of opening.
