Krug's Tavern, Newark

Just a heads up-we drove there last night, to find that they're closed for renovations at least until 2/16. I'd call first to make sure they're open before driving to Ironbound. We ended up at Rutt's Hut.

I stopped by Monday, they said they'd be open by Wednesday. The really just seemed to clean the place up. Just checked their website, they're open. I'll make a visit soon.

A few of us made a visit last week-burgers were ok; unlike previous visits they seemed much more pressed and squished than left to cook quietly, so they weren't as juicy. Good flavor, but somewhat dry. New Park Tavern in nearby Jersey City is my favorite right now for thick bar burgers. Buns at Krug are 'meh' as well. Terrific service, though, by the daughter of the owner at Krugs.

@Johnlockedema Have you tried a burger at Top's Diner in East Newark? Pat LaFrieda beef, delivered and ground daily in house. I think they are very good.

Betty, I haven't tried Tops. I've never heard of a restaurant serving LaFrieda meat that they ground themselves onsite rather than buying meat ground and mixed at LaFrieda with one of their blends.
