Are Scottie's in the same ball park as White Castle and Krystal from a taste standpoint?

I bet that smelled nice. I remember waking up and heading off to work the day after indulging in a late night beer and White Castle feast the night before. It's amazing how something that seemed like such a good idea at 2:00am can come back to haunt you later. (Especially if you had just tossed all the empties into the back seat. And it was a hot, sunny morning. And the windows were rolled up.)

      Wallyum,
Best I remember, Scottie's hamburgers were very close in taste and appearance to Krystal and Blue Circle hamburgers. At one time there was a Scottie's in Morristown.

Likely because they are open 24/7 with the drive-thru...but damn, they ae just plain tasty drunk or not, when they are right off the grill!

All this may explain the large, imposing and even archetecturally interesting Krystal on Bourbon St. whose glowing neon becons all down the rows of bars and strip shows.

Last week the new vending company that stocks our cafeterias came up with quite a surprise. We now have Krystal hamburgers (two for $1.50) and Krystal cheesburgers (two for $1.75) in the vending machines. I'm located in East Texas (Marshall) and the closest Krystals are in Beaumont and in the Dallas area, so I can now get my Krystal "fix" at work!

"Thanks for clarifying the difference between Krystal and White Castle. We have Krystal here in Memphis but for some reason they have WC in Nashville. Anybody know which came first?"

Yes, White Castle (1921) (oldest burger chain in the country).

              Krystal came out in 1932.

I prefer Krystals to White Castles. White Castles always seem to be soggy to me. Of course that didn't stop me from eating six or seven driving down I-40 this weekend. As I've said before these little burgers might be the best roadfood for driving as there is little danger of getting goop on your shirt. I think Southerners often prefer Krystals while those from the Northeast prefer White Castles. I guess it's just what you grew up eating.

"Krystal........White Castle.........Neither one can hold a candle to the best mini-burger ever: Royal Castle! A pile of Royal Castle hamburgers and a birch beer served in a frosted mug.......it doesn't get any better than that. I sure do miss the Royal Castles!"

Why? Aren't they still in business? I can't seem to find a website for them.

                  ;)

"I do not know if I can tell the difference between a White Castle and a Krystal. I know they both taste good about 2:00AM."

I had my first Krystal burger yesterday (and grew up on White Castle), and it was like night and day to me. Liked White Castle better. Krystal felt like a bad imitation trying to imitate White Castle but without getting all the steps/details right.

"I guess technically they are a hamburger but to me they are more of a sandwich."

                    Well, hamburgers ARE sandwiches, so.......

"Certainly a unique taste and I like them both."

Krystals were ok, but never need to have one again. White Castle all the way baby!

                      >Krystals have the best grease,

                      That is subjective, of course.

                      >the better onions (fried not raw),

Actually, White Castle's are fried as well. I had thought Krystal's were the raw ones actually.

                      >the mustard-pickle double-salty whammy,

Wow, can't get THAT at White Castle (or anywhere!)

                      >and in no little regard, the distiction of being a SOUTHERN product.

                      It's little, don't worry.

                      :)

Honestly, what does that have to do with taste at all?

                      >Oh and BTW, I heard a nasty rumor that the reason WCs have 5 holes in them is NOT to ensure quicker, even cooking, but that in the beginning, flecks of tainted meat were poked out of the burgers manually, and the burgers stayed like that "just because". Of course, you should never listen to rumormongering, but...you never know. ;)

                      We know.
                      http://www.geocities.com/conspiracyprime/e2_whitecastle.htm

they wouldn't patent the 5 holes if it was meant to cover up something as serious and unsanitary as bad meat. It's actually the opposite, but read ther link above. Do some research the next time you feel like spreading rumors. White Castle weas the first burger chain, is still going strong, and growing, and a cult of Americans, and there's a reason.

After all, have you ever heard of Harold and Kumar go to Krystal Burger?

                      Didn't think so.

"I had my first sack of Krystals in Mississippi a year ago. New England doesn't have anything like these guys.

No, but NY City does. It's called White Castle and it is the creator of the slider, so you need look no further.

"I was hoping that the midwest would. I can't find any slider/belly bomber type burger places anywhere near Omaha. Can anyone help?"

Sorry, St Louis and Minneapolis are the closest cities with White Castles to Omaha. Use locator in link above to find their exact locations.

White castles are indeed more moist from the steam cooking through them (and they put the buns on top of the burger while the burger is being steamed)

Here you can watch how they do it, step by step (flash presentation)
                          http://whitecastle.com/_pages/secret.asp

But yes, I think one is more comfortable with what one grew up eating, regardless of whether it was better or not.

Hence my point. They're so good, they're no longer available (joking, but the fact is White Castle is the oldest burger chain in America (1921) and Krystal not far behind (1932), and yet they have survived. That says something for (and about) them.

I could tell them apart easily when I tried a Krystal burger for the first time back in March (grew up on White Castle).

Don't get me wrong, Krystal was good, but no question I prefer White Castle (and preferences aside, was easy to tell them apart if you know one of them very well, which I do).

No, you're right. You were also right when you said "what in the hell does that have to do with taste anyway?"
Trust me, I was raised on Whitey's and indulge whenever the urge hits, but whenever we get south of Northern Kentucky, which is usually some time during high school football season, Wally and T.P. happily do Krystal.
Now if I could only convince my kids.

I like White Castle, but had a chance to try a Krystal burger for the first time this past summer. They're definitely not alike, and all in all, I prefer WC... That steamed oniony goodness is what makes the difference for me. Oh, and I'm not sure I've seen anyone mention their jalapeno cheeseburgers? Oh, baby...

A few years ago, we also tried Crabill's up in Urbana, OH:

                                          http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Overview.aspx?RefID=519

They were more similar to Krystal burgers than WC, IMO. I did like sitting at the counter being able to watch the ladies working there fry up the hamburger patties and joke around with the regulars. It's a good roadfood stop if you're in the area seeing the Ohio caverns like we were.

LOL, you're welcome. There's a few listed roadfood stops in West Liberty too, but I've only been to the ice cream place--good stuff. I'd like to try the restaurant that has pork tenderloins sometime, but we don't get up that way very often.

There's also a trout farm along 68(?), Freshwater Farms, I think it is? Haven't been there in a while, but they had a little store which sold fresh trout (and you can feed the live ones outside in their tanks), smoked trout and tasty dips made from the smoked trout.

I was in a tight spot tonight at work and couldn't find time to get out to get something to eat, so I swallowed my pride and took a chance on the wheel of death. One of the items in our frozen case was White Castle cheeseburgers, and as a matter of fact, they were the only edible items in the case. I decided to give them a try. They're nothing like the Sliders they sell up the road a ways. The frozed Whiteys reminded me more of Krystal burgers. Not at all bad, when you consider that my other choice was something called the "Burrito Of Death". I can't say that I'll head up to the cafeteria the next time the CRAVE hits, but they make a decent option if I'm ever forced to eat here.

Apparently WC has laid in a supply of garlic cheese. They have a bunch of new menu items that feature it. Wonder if they'll do the garlic cheesesticks?
