Krystal closings in KY

While on vacation this summer we noticed that a lot of the Krystal placess along I-75 have closed. I've also heard of the Danville, KY location closing. Anyone know what the story is? Failed regional franchisee or something more sinister?

Krystal restaurants have been in decline for the last several years. Not anywhere close to the Krystal's I remember when growing up in Atlanta. They have tried some new menu items with mixed success and the caliber of personnel has been going steadily downhill. As for closing restaurants, the Krystal on S. Cobb Drive in Smyrna has closed. Others that I know of are still open, but I wouldn't be surprised to see other Krystals being shuttered.

I was there once after a football game. They served my son chicken wings that were partially frozen. That's what he gets for not being a Krystal fan like his old man.

It is strange that I noticed a Krystal closing in Knoxville on Kingston Pike that had been there better than 30 years. I have no idea why?

They have several locations in Knoxville

Have you seen the report of the fellow who travels 150 miles to get his Krystal fix? He does this about 10 times per year. Krystal's got wind of this and put his face on their burger boxes. I can't think of any fast food I like well enough to travel a great distance for.

I noticed that the just tore down a location in Knoxville that had been there for at least 50 years. I am not sure what the problem is?

a couple of years ago they opened up a Krystals for the first time in San Antonio then closed it down about a year later. Just recently it opened up again under new management or something about franchising or not being a franchise anymore. I don't know something like that. I've yet to try them but I hear they're almost like White Castle burgers?? Never seen one in south texas so I definately wouldn't know.

According to the KRYSTAL.com website business is better than it has ever been.

No mention of the closings in KY/TN, just more expansion to TX.

I did find it interesting that White Castle and Krystal hardly ever overlap, only in the bluegrass region of KY.

Krystal use to be one of my favortie treats but it may be my age but I find it difficult to tolerate them anymore.

I bought a couple of them a few weeks ago and they stayed with me for a couple of days.

I had to go to Bowling Green with my daughter for a speech competition last month and noticed that Krystal and White Castle co-exist off the exit where we stayed. If we go back next year I'll have to get an order to go from each and do a rare side by side taste test. My daughter is REALLY not going to be happy with that.

I think it is my age. The last time I had them, I tasted them for the longest time. They were tasty going down but the end results () wasn't worth it.

Krystal has been my friend for a long time and it is not their problem, it is mine.

i grew up in East Tennessee eating Krystal and Blue Circle hamburgers. After living in Northeast Texas for a few years, I was thrilled when a Krystal opened in Longview, only 18 miles from my home. Another Krystal opened in Waco, my wife's home town, so I could easily get my Krystal fix. Sadly, both the Longview and Waco stores have closed, each one lasting less than one year. I guess that native Texans just don't like Krystal hamburgers!

I just got back from Florida a week ago and made a stop off in Lexington for a sack to try them agian. In cinci my wife and I get a sack of white Castle everyweek.
I must say the bun was to big and not steamed, all bread, not much meat flavor. Were White Castle has that everything steamed and melt in your mouth feel I love.
We got them the same way we get White Castles to make it as close as possible. Cheese, meat, bun.
It seemed there was alot of Krystals all the way down to Atlanta. We joked every exit had a Krystals, Waffle House and a Harley Motorcycle shop.
All in all I have tried Krystals 3 dif times over the last 10 years and I wont go back anymore. Its nothing but steamy pillows of goodness from White Castles for me from now on.

Buckshot, is that the same Blue Circle that is in downtown Bristol? I pass it all the time but have never stopped - I wasn't sure if it was open or not. What would you recommend there?

We still have our two in Gainesville. Went twice last week. I noticed both times that the buns were not soggy but toasted?!?!? I prefer the soggy actually. Two with cheese and a side of chili is the combination I can't seem to break.

    angeltearsmc,

Do a Google search on Bule Circle Hamburgers. You will see an article by Fred Sauceman about the Blue Circle in Bristol. I think that it's the last remaining Blue Circle. I enjoyed two Krystal burgers for lunch today - out of the vending machine at work!

When the Blue Circle was present in Knoxville, I use to eat there once a week. They have been gone as Buckshot pointed out, the one in Bristol is the last of the group. Sauceman has posted about them before. I have no idea about if they are still up to their original quality.

Where are they located now. I will be in Bristol for the races in a few weeks. We are doing the NHRA event there.

It's on Bluff City Highway... from the racetrack, you pass Wal-Mart, then a couple miles later the road seems to "fork" - take the right fork, it becomes Bluff City Hwy... Blue Circle will be on your right about a couple miles down that road. I think it's beside an old putt-putt place but I'm not entirely sure of that. Maybe I'll stop in there the next time I'm headed up to Abingdon.

I was in Nashville recently and saw a Krystal and a White Castle across the street from each other. I thought I was at the nexus of parallel worlds ;)

I have loved Krystals since my first exposure back in the 60s; I would certainly travel 25 miles, maybe more, for one. Well, for four doubles with cheese, definitely! The sad truth is that the nearest one is nearly 130 miles away.

I will also note that the Krystals on US1 near Port Orange
(Daytona) closed a few months ago. The other one on US 1
(a few miles north) near Speedway Blvd. is still open!

Tried them for the FIRST time a few months ago in northern Fla. Got a big bag of them, poised to chow down...then.....yechhhhhh!

Were they ever "good"? These were non-edible.

We had a Krystal here in Kingsport, TN until a few years ago. It was on the main drag and seemed to stay busy. One day it was closed with no signs or explanation. A few weeks later the entire building which was some kind of prefab unit was put on a trailer and removed to the parking lot of Sam's Club were it sat unused for several months. Always figured they put in back up in the area but to my knowledge they never did and at some point it was moved from Sam's parking lot.

They did open a combo Krystal-Taco Bell in a Exxon station in the area. I got over my desire for the Krystal-White Castle burgers a few years back but I still like the Krystal Chiks sandwiches.

Dunno if the one in Georgetown, KY (combo w/ a Shell Gas Station) was or not, IIRC it was closed last time I went by.

Nothing like old time Krystals. The burgers served had an 'organ meat' flavor to them. The first time I thought it was me, the second, and last time, I knew it wasn't me it was the burger. Bad taste. Shame.
