Krystal restaurant chain up for sale Wed, 08/3/11 5:23 PM (permalink)
The Krystal Co., which owns or franchises 364 stores in 11 states, said it has retained a investment firm to find a buyer for the Chattanooga-based restaurant chain.
I wouldn't be surprised to see this place go under. I was pretty disappointed the last time I was in one a couple of months ago.

Krystal is owned by Port Royal Holdings, a private investment firm whose Principal is also CEO & Pres. of Jackson Hewitt Tax Service. He's a former Coca Cola Exec. Probably cleaned up the Balance Sheet and is now trying to peddle it. Classic Investor Business model---Buy it Cheap, Put some Lipstick on it and Sell it!

Krystal had an experimental, prototype "fast casual" store in Alpharetta GA.  Called K Cafe, it was intended to compete with Panera and Atlanta Bread Co.  It was reported on July 31 that moving trucks were cleaning it out.  The website and Facebook page were deleted on August 2.
If the chain's being put up for sale, it seems that somebody is tying up loose ends and cleaning house...!

I hope it doesn't become part of some conglomerate like A&W and Long John Silver's are!

If you go to Krystal expecting the same little burger at different locations, you will probably be disappointed.  Sometimes if you add the word 'wet' to your order of krystal burgers they seem to be better to me.  I was in Nashville a few months ago and was surprised to see White Castles there, they told me there were 3 locations.  My girlfriend and I were surprised that White Castles burgers were so good they put Krystal to shame, ugh!  I am from Chattanooga, I live in Chattanooga and I am proud Krystal is based in Chattanooga, but Krystal has lost their way and if they don't find it, White Castles are coming.

As a lover of White Castle burgers who has eaten at Krystal, I'd suggest that such a scenario would be a lucky thing for you.

I think Nashville is the only market where Krystal and WC co-exist.

I sorta grew up with Krystal and I have ate there many times over the years.  Sadly I have watched them sorta go downhill for some time.  In my opinion, White Castle has always had a better menu and a better product although we have never had them in Knoxville.  We did have Blue Circle which at one time had many locations but I believe they only have one now in Bristol, TN.  Perhaps Krystal will decide to locate in Knoxville which is a land of rich chains

I stopped at a Krystal yesterday on my way home from Louisville.  Decided to try Krystal because I had not been to one for a long time.  I was surprised at how bad they had gotten.  And over priced.  I told myself that's the last time I go to a Krystal

The last time I ate at a Krystal ( roughly a year ago ), I was really surprised at how much the quality had gone downhill. Their burgers never were anything great, but they were certainly better than what I had on that last visit. No wonder the parent company is looking to unload the chain.

Well this development certainly doesn't surprise me.  I agree with Bob.  It had been a decade in between the times I dined in a Krystal, and the quality in between those two occasions was stark.  The meal at my penultimate visit had been passable; after the last time I visited, however, it was time to visit the vomitorium.
