L&N Seafood Grill's Biscuits - anyone have a recipe?

These were addicting and the best part of the many visits I paid to L&N back in Northern VA.

    Thought I'd try again.

For you NoVa folks, L&N had places in Fair Oaks, Reston Town Center, and Pentagon City circa mid-'80's - early '90's.

L&N Seafood opened up a restaurant in Knoxville about 20 years ago and it was located in the L&N old railroad depot.  I wonder if they are related?

Same outfit, but more than 30 years ago.  (Time flies!)..

In fact, they started in Knoxville, expanded, and were then acquired by Morrison's Restaurant Group out of Atlanta (Morrison's Cafeterias, Ruby Tuesday's, etc.).  Eventually, Morrison's converted most of the remaining L&N's to "Ruby's".

They had a waitperson constantly circling the dining room offering those small, sweet "drop buscuits" before and during the meal.

And, they also sold the biscuit mix for home use.

Sundancer7:  Yes!  I remembered some sort of yik yak about a World's Fair when L&N opened their first place in NoVa at Fair Oaks Mall.

Sure enough, the first L&N opened in the old L&N RR Station for the 1982 World's Fair in Knoxville.

I had forgotten all about that Fair, but I sure as Hell remember those biscuits!

    Jim,

You are correct. I recall L&N Seafood from when we lived in Knoxville in the mid-80's. They were located near the World's Fair Park and were fairly upscale for my budget at that time.

    Something similar?

It does indeed look similar - especially method 1:  dropping spoonfuls of the dough onto a cookie sheet.  And, as the "shopping list" looks short and the prep a snap I'll give this a try myself.  (Wafa, aka "Mrs. Metro", has been on a 'fat-free' baking binge that has lately yielded the driest baked goods I have ever had; this will be a nice change!).

    Thanks, Michael !

I hope it works. I happen to really like regular Bisquick drop biscuits. They're so easy, and so good.

The biscuits turned out well.  Even though they were quite tasty, they weren't quite L&N's.

To get those, add 2oz. more cream, another tbsp. sugar, and whisk with clarified butter before baking.

I wonder where the "something sweet" before a seafood dinner originated.  I remember some "old school" seafood places around D.C. (Hogate's, Bish Thompson's, O'Donnell's, et al.) used to serve glazed cinnamon rolls as you were seated.  I guess L&N's sweet biscuits were a "Tennessee twist" on that tradition.
