Just moved to Lafayette, LA, hour east of Lake Charles & hour west of Baton Rouge, but cannot find any good BBQ????? How can we be in such a food mecca without BBQ? So close to Texas & yet so far! Any suggestions?

Crawdads is a diet food. It is one of the few things I know of that you spend more energy obtaining the fruit than you get from the calories obtained. Regardless, I sure do enjoy them. I looke forward to my crawdad fix coming up with my upcoming visit to Louisiana in mid January. I hope RickF is available. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

There used to be a Luther's in Lafayette, near the Cajundome, but I'm not sure it's still there. For a chain, Luther's is pretty good.

"Podnuh's" in Baton Rouge is alright. But it ain't North Carolina, Tennessee, Kansas City or Texas.

Luthers still there, but not very good. Also a Corky;s New place opened called LIL Daddy's that's not bad.

A friend of mine lives just outside Lafayette (Youngsville) and according to him, Gator Cove (an independent, BTW) "has the best brisket around". I can't personally vouch for it but it sounds like it's at least worth a try...good luck! Brad O. PS If you ever get over to Gulfport MS he recommends Montana's for barbecue and seafood...

Just remember, though, that a lot of these fine folks in LA and TX actually smoke beef and call it barbecue. But they seem sane otherwise.

Although I live in one of those areas, Rick, I've forgiven these people, and live among them peacefully. Whenever someone around here smokes a brisket, I introduce them to the best BBQ re-orientation tool that I know of: pork ribs.

Merely passing on information. I've not had BBQ at any of these. How would you grade the places where you have been?

As much as I LOVE BBQ (NC, KC, TX and TN), I barely missed it the year I spent touring Louisiana. There are so many other options for great food there that I was perfectly content.

GO to T.J. Ribs in Baton Rouge. Great ribs and chicken and plenty of LSU memorabilia. You can even see Billy Cannon's Heisman trophy.

And as I've posted before, if you ever make it up to Monroe, I'll "pit" Danken Trail BBQ against all comers.

I have to agree. I live in Monroe and Danken Trail's is the best BBQ here. There is also a spin off by a guy who used to work there called BBQ West which is similar. Both are excellent.
