Labor Day Weekend
Sat, 09/4/10 8:16 AM
( permalink)
Hi what is on the menu for labor day weekend? I think we are going to do some grilling and I am trying to get some different ideas instead of plain old hot dogs and burgers & chicken etc. I am also always stumped as to what to serve for side dishes. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Our Miata club is having a picnic at Big Ridge State park ( http://www.state.tn.us/environment/parks/BigRidge/) We will have about 30 cars there. I guess it will be the usual stuff: burgers, hot dogs, pork butt, baked beans, mac and cheese, cole slaw, wine, beer, muffins, grilled corn on the cobb, cake pies and etc. We usually have a very good time with everyone showing off their Miata's that are spotlessly clean. I have some chicken thighs marinating for dinner tonight and in a little while I'm going to try my hand at a grilled salsa called chiltomate. If I never post again it means I overdid the habaneros. Tomorrow is the Brat Fest and we're going to a Milwaukee Brewers game on Monday, which means tailgating but with burgers this time as we'll have had our fill of bratwurst. Brad

It got cold, so today I'm doing sauerkraut with polish sausage. Tomorrow will probably be lasagna. Monday, however, I'll be eating whatever the food vendors are serving at Labor Fest, our local Labor Day event. I believe my favourite downtown bar is cooking ribs, so that'll probably be it. Their ribs are fabulous.

We are on a roundabout trip to Minnesota's North Shore and Grand Marais for a Class B camper van rally I am hosting. First we headed south to La Crosse, WI to visit the grandsons, tomorrow east across Wisconsin to the 2010 Brat Challenge with maybe the only Minnesota entry, and then wind our way through Northern Wisconsin lakes and forests back north to Minnesota to get to Grand Marais by Thursday.

Sundancer that sounds fun I love Miata's, dumb question do they still make them? Brad that grilled salsa sounds intriging let me know how it turns out. I bet it would be good with grilled fish.

I bet it would be good with grilled fish. Not only do they still make them but they are the #1 selling sports car in the world. Last year, they topped 1,000,000 in sales. Mine is a 2009, black on black with a power retractable hard top. It is considered sacrilegious to drive with the top up even in the winter[}:) Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

I sold my 2000 Miata recently. L/S model. Oh well. Nice car but I don't miss it. Now if I could have put a small block Chevy V8 engine in it that would have been a different story. Everything is better with V8. ;)

P.S. due to me being fired this last week, I will be taking my first Labor Day off for as long as I can remember. Labor day for me was a holiday that I labored twice as hard as normal. David O.

Usually we do a variety of wursts from a local butcher, but I took a day trip to the Bronx (yes the Bronx) last week, and one of my stops was Stina's Provsions in New Rochelle, where I bought a 3 lb. pack of Natural casing all beef Sabrettes. My wife is making mac salad right now, and as soon as she's out of the kitchen I'm going to try my hand at puttng together some kind of NY style Onion sauce. I guess we'll call it a NY Pushcart Labor Day cookout. The dogs are 8 to a lb (=24 dogs). Since there will be 6 of us, there's a 4 dog per person limit.... For dessert we are having an S&S Cheesecake, direct from their hole-in-the-wall storefront on W233rd St in the Bronx. Some say it's the best cheesecake in NY. It certainly looks good, I've been staring into the box in the fridge for 3 days now.

I labored in the office all labor day weekend, but I did leave around 4:00 each day. Friday I grilled shrimp rubbed with cumin and chili, marinated in lime juice olive oil, garlic, cilantro and jalapeno, served it with mango salsa and coconut flavored rice. Saturday when it cooled down so much I made chicken cacciatore served over angel hair. Sunday its was a sirloin caramelized on the Weber with bakers and salad with a basil garlic vinaigrette. Tonight it was pan braised pork chops with a balsamic vinegar, chicken stock braising liquid, which included caramelized onions and bacon. Served that up with new potatoes and saute'd swiss chard....nothing out of the ordinary really.
