Lamar's - Chattanooga, TN

I'm currently in Chattanooga. Last night (Tu) we tried to go to Lamar's only to learn that they are only open Thur - Sat. The place is sketchy (that is being kind) and I don't know if I can get the wife to go back. Has anyone been to Lamar's? If so, please let me know your thoughts. If the feedback is postive I should be able to convince her to make a return trip. If not does anyone have any suggestions for stellar fried chicken in Chattanooga?

I've not been to Lamar's but always wanted to go there.  I'd heard the fried chicken was good and served family style.  It's not the best looking neighborhood but Chattanooga is an old southern town and lamar's has been there forever.  Still open the 4 days and limited hours.
Not aware of any other fried chicken alternatives.  Tell the wife she'll not find another restaurant like it anywhere else.

    hello,
If you love finding great dive bars with their own unique personas - this is right up your alley especially if you are looking for the Rick James. Retro velvet wallpaper, leather coaches, dim lighting. As said before 1/2 fried chicken is great.
    thanks

That's a good recommendation 991.  I'll try and make it and check it out.

I am just outside of Chattanooga and I have never even heard of Lamar's. I looked them up online and know where they are, but have not heard about their chicken.

You might consider Bea's at 4500 Dodds Avenue  Chattanooga, TN 37407. It is family dining. You sit at a table with a lazy susan and everyone dips their own. It has been years since I have been there, but I do remember the chicken being great! It is family owned and operated since....Sherman's march south? Well, maybe not that long, be a good while (60+ years).

I enthusiastically  recommend the fried chicken at both Lamar's Restaurant and Nikki's Drive Inn.  While Lamar's' location may initially catch you off guard, a wide range of people go there and it's a pretty legendary local establishment.  If you visit Nikki's, don't forget their world-class onion rings.  (While Bea's has reasonably good fried chicken, I can't offer it the same enthusiastic endorsement.)

Not only will the location catch you off guard so will the days of operation. They are only open Thurs - Sat (?). I stopped by on a Tuesday evening and essentially broke into the motel (it's located in a seedy motel) only to find out that they were open limited days. Not an experience that I care to repeat.

There's parking and a better entrance in the rear.

Come to think of it, I also recommend Champy's  Famous Fried Chicken on the same street but closer to downtown.  They have great fried chicken, catfish, and Mississippi Delta tamales.  So, it's Lamar's, Nikki's and Champy's!

Never heard of them. I wonder if their hours are like that due of the tourist off season there right now.

Nikki's is still on my to-do list, but I can certainly recommend Champy's.  We've stopped by on our last two trips to Chattanooga for our blog and just been incredibly pleased with their chicken.  They also do really good catfish and tamales.

I believe Bea's closed quite a few years ago now.  It was good though.

Not sure if it was your recommendation or not Mellow, but we stopped at Champy's on the way south for Thanksgiving. It is indeed phenomenal chicken. Tender, juicy, herby, crispy and very slightly spicy. It's that little kick that sets it apart in my books. Truly fabulous.

Everything else we tried was great too. Best Fried Dill Pickles I've had as well.
