When I was a youngster, my grandmother would take me along shopping. Every grocery store that I recalled had landjaegers hanging from strings on the wall behind the meat counter. While they're still around, one pretty much has to go to a specialty market here in Milwaukee although small town butcher shops still carry the tradition on. What about your neck of the woods? Is this a Wisconsin thing or are they available elsewhere? One of my favorites is from the truly neat "Swiss" town of New Glarus. http://www.ruefsmeatmarket.com/ This entire community is a Roadfood lovers dream. Next door to Ruef's is a wonderful bakery that too is worth a trip. For those unfortunates that have never tried a landjaeger, it is sort of a highly seasoned (not hot) dried smoked Polish, slightly flatened. A Slim Jim does it no more justice than to say a plain McDonalds is the best hamburger there is!

There is a place called Carek's Market in Roslyn, Washington that makes a great landjaeger. This place is an essential stop on any I-90 roadtrip (best jerky I've ever had too.) Roslyn itself is quite a trip. The entire town was the set for the 1990's TV show Northern Exposure.

There is a German run deli here in Delaware that carries it. It's one of our favorite dry sausages.

Yeah, Karl Ehmer has some of the best sausages, hams etc.. I especially enjoy their double smoked bacon infrequently since it contains a lot of fat. On the other hand my father who is 92 still indulges the bacon occasionally. Many times my fathers lunch consisted of rye bread, fresh garlic and double smoked bacon (which is fully cooked). The smoked hams are also tops.

I remember being in the Bird in Hand farmer's market near Lancaster Pa a few years pack. Several butchers display their fine products there and it's worth the trip. I spied some Landjaeger and bought a few. When I opened the package, one had that little paper band still on and it read 'Karl Ehmer' and I was living in Glendale at the time. There's nothing better than taking a couple of landjaegers some pieces of Vt cheddar and an apple in your backpack and going spring skiing. Enjoy the sun and your lunch at the side of a trail and watch the world go by.

I've read thru these posts and I'm sort of surprised that Landjaeger is that difficult to come by in some areas with German delis. I live in NJ, but my roots are in Brooklyn. Just about every German deli I've ever been in in NJ or Brooklyn carries Landjaeger. And usually if you ask for it, they will routinely ask if you prefer hard or soft (no wisecracks please). I prefer the harder the better (again, no wisecracks). ---Ken

New Yorkers can get them from Schaller & Weber, on Second Ave., just south of E. 86th St. You also can get genuine German wieners and frankfurters.

Usinger's on Old World Third Street in Milwaukee makes and sells landjaeger. Grasch Foods on North Avenue in Brookfield also sells Usinger's landjaeger. Nueske's makes landjaeger. They sell it at their factory store and their products are retailed throughout Wisconsin. No need to go to Madison. The bakery in New Glarus makes the best chocolate chip cookies in Wisconsin. CSD

In Baltimore, you can find Landjaeger at Egon Binkert. He is on Philadelphia Road in Rosedale.

quote:As good as Miller's piled high with Jake's corned beef? Hmm, give me some ground round (raw, of course) some cold butter, thinly sliced raw sweet onions, some salt and pepper and two loaves of both. If I'm still alive after an hour, ask me which rye bread was better! Welcome back to the States. The China trip sounded like too much fun. I make plans to go visit your operation next month (you're on Hwy 50 & I-94, right?) and then I read where the whole shebang might be 86t or is it the mall farther south?

Next to the cart is a condiment table for our customers to create their "perfect" dog. We have everything to make it Chicago style, including a few other condiments. Ketchup is one of those other condiments. We go through twice as much ketchup as mustard on a regular basis. My favorite jerk chicken is from the Pork Pit in Mobay. I only posted the China trip on the hot dog board. CSD

CSD, I hate to get even farther off topic but after over twenty trips to Jamaica I'll agree that the Pork Pit has outstanding jerk. My favorite however, was at one of the anonymous stands at Boston Beach which near Port Antonio. I had read a tale on one of Jamaica's message board about a missing taxicab driver along with a group of friends and a run in with the law and the story sounded like something that you'd have posted. This was back a bit. I've never had great Jamaican jerk in Wisconsin, what about Chicago? Steny's tavern on 2nd and National has good jerk wings. To ease back on topic somewhat, I made jerk jerky this year and brought it with us to Treasure Beach along with some landjaeger for some friends. It all went over well.

In Manhattan, you can get Landjaeger at a Schaller & Weber, on Second Ave., just south of E. 86th St., as well as (I assume) authentic German wieners and frankfurters... and bratwurst... and well, lots of German meats and link products. Highly recommended!
