I believe "paleta" is literally translated from Spanish to English as "little shovel." Since a popsicle looks somewhat like a little shovel, I guess this has become what Mexicans call a popsicle. Popsicles are very popular in Mexico and you can buy paletas in any Mexican store in the US. But the ones you buy in most Mexican stores are made of cheap juice loaded with sugar.

Las Paletas, the name of a popsicle store in Nashville, has taken popsicle making to art form. They have popsicles with real fruit juice, pieces of fruit, coffee popsicles -- even an olive popsicle, I believe!

This place is the talk of Nashville. I don't remember where it is, but we have been there once and they are terrific!!! I don't know if popsicles qualify as Roadfood -- but they are good nonetheless!!! :-)

Yes, I recall it now being in a part of town called 12 South. Have you been? They are great. And they look like little jewels in the freezer, in their clear wrapping.

We could have a game show on Nashville food called Stump the Pogo. If it exists, he knows about it!

I posted a topic recently about this very type of place.

The paletarias are popping up in my area all over the place. But some are better than others. There are packaged business set ups that a paletaria can buy that vary in quality. Some do make their own ice cream, not from packaged mixes, but I suspect most are buying into a business plan. Children really like all the exotic flavors and colors. I try to stick to the paletas because they usually have little fat and I love fruit things. But coconut ice cream is so good. Anything with chile and lime or cucumber is great.
