Last loaf of Wonder Bread

I have defrosted my last loaf of Wonder Bread to make grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup tonight.  I wonder if it is the last loaf in the state.  Or in the country!

Thanks a lot. Now I'll have to stay awake all night to guard against attempts to break in to get my Wonder Bread. " />

The only thing that makes me wonder about Wonder Bread is why anyone would eat a slab of chemically treated plastic posing as a slice of bread. Why are all those mass produced breads like Wonder, Sunbeam et al even being sold!

I remember eating at Dreamland BBQ in Montgomery, AL and thinking I was also in Wonder Bread heaven.

Nah. The sardines are in the cabinet with the anchovies, the kippered snacks, the Treet, the Spam, the Vienna sausage and the Mary Kitchen corned beef hash.

    Three reasons:

    1. You can't beat what my parents called cotton batting bread for things such as diner hot turkey/beef sandwiches,  peanut butter sandwiches, grilled cheese sandwiches or toast. The fancier unchemically treated bread just isn't right for those things.

    2. Price.

    3. Nostalgia/tradition.

Back in the fifties our family had home delivery from a Lewis Bakeries breadman. Lewis Bakeries was a London institution and my bread of choice for peanut butter sandwiches and toast was Lewis Snowflake bread until Lewis closed its doors in the face of competition from the mega bakeries early this century.

Here's a copycat recipe that makes a better loaf of white bread than Wonder Bread.

Buttery White Bread for Bread Machine

This is a delicious, buttery white bread that is
great for sandwiches, toast or just plain with butter.

This has the lightness and texture of Wonder Bread but
    with a nice buttery flavor.

    2/3 cup lukewarm water
    1 large egg
    1 tablespoon granulated sugar
    1 1/4 teaspoons table salt
5 tablespoons soft butter (I used butter flavor Crisco)
    1/2 cup plain yogurt
    3 1/2 cups Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
2 1/4 teaspoons (or 1 packet) bread machine or instant yeast

Add ingredients to bread machine in order listed or
according to your bread machine mfg's directions.

Settings: White Bread, 1 1/2 lb loaf, Medium Crust.

    Press Start.

Makes One, 1 1/2 lb loaf.

Thank you for the recipe! I'll pass it on to my sister who has a bread making machine.
