Last meal at the Berghoff - what should I order? Wed, 01/25/06 2:41 PM (permalink)
I'll be meeting my uncle at the Berghoff for lunch on Friday. It's going to be tough knowing this is my last visit to a unique and wonderful place.

How do you choose between halibut, whitefish, pot roast or schnitzel? I'll have an extra side order of creamed spinach in memory of my late father. The Berghoff was his favorite restaurant, and the creamed spinach was his favorite side dish.

We had our last meal there a couple weeks ago. In my post I give in depth descriptions of my meal and those of my family. I also give recommendations about when to go and where to park.

      Savor the evening and Enjoy!

We ate there last Saturday and I would recommend either the wiener schnitzel or braised lamb shank. Both were excellent. I love wiener schnitzel and the Berghoff's has spoiled me for other places.

I'm wondering; what's the reaction in Chitown to the Berghoff closing? Any outrage, citizens' associations, historical claims, anything? Is Chicago going gently into that good night about the Berghoff? When Sears Fine Foods was closed in SF, the outcry was so large they brought it back. Is that possible for the Berghoff? What's a catering company going to do with a room like the Berghoff's dining room anyway?

The response has been sad resignation with long lines waiting to get in for a last taste. I'm not sure how much public outrage can achieve seeing as how this is a personal, family decision, not the act of some evil alderman exercising his power of eminent domain.

As for the future of the building, I could be wrong, but, while a small part of it will remain, housing the Berghoff bar and serving sandwiches and lighter fare, the rest of the building will be sold or rented for other purposes. To my understanding, the catering operation will be run off site. I'm sure there's someone out there who knows better and will not hesitate to correct me.

I'm wearing my asbestos suit, fire away!
