Lays regionals chips?

I remember last year or so, Lays (I think that was the brand, perhaps it was another national brand) was featuring "regional" potato chips. I beleive two different areas of US were to be chosen for 6 months each. There was a stir in Santa Fe because the label of the "Santa Fe" Chips had a picture of Taos Pueblo on it, which is about 75 miles away from Santa Fe, not in SF. I think they also had like Chicago chips, New England chips, Califonia Chips, etc. However I don't see them anymore. Is this promotion still going on?

I know when I travel to Texas there are regional Frito-Lay offerings down there are not available back home in Baltimore. I know Lays has a Chile-Limon flavor Lays Chip and a Limon Tangy Lime Lays that I can't get in Maryland. In Canada they also have a Fries & Gravy flavored chip among other flavored Lays (Salsa, Roast Chicken flavors). Checkout the products at http://www.lays.ca/en/ But then our Regional chip makers have local offerings like Utz's Crab or Carolina BBQ and Herr's Old Bay Spiced chips that are regional flavor favorites here and aren't available in other areas. Also Herr's has a Salt & Pepper that is pretty darn good along with a Ketchup flavor and Steak & Worcestershire flavor as well that I have never tried. Links to two of our local regional chip makers http://www.utzsnacks.com/beUTZProducts_Main.shtml http://www.herrs.com/Products/Products.html

The concept was similar to the "Tastes of America" flavours. Among the varieties were Quebec four cheese, Toronto pizza, some sort of Calgary stampede BBQ, as well as a Maritime sea salt and pepper flavour, which proved to be so popular that it was actually added as a permanent addition to the Lays Canada line. I believe there were two other Canadian flavours, though what they actually were eludes me.

Traveling to the UK a lot on business last year, I was amazed at the flavors offered in their potato chips. Walker's is the Lay's of the UK and just that company alone offers these flavors in their basic line: Barbecue Beef & Onion Cheese & Onion Heinz Tomato Ketchup Marmite Yeast Extract Pickled Onion Prawn Cocktail Ready Salted Roast Chicken Salt & Vinegar Smoky Bacon Worcester Sauce Anyone for some prawn cocktail or yeast extract flavored chips?

The Lay's thing was just a packaging/marketing idea that didn't work. Same product they'd been carrying all along. Loaded Baked Potato??? I'll stick with regular "Jay's". Also Lay's has done the same with the Grandma's line of soft cookies, streamlining the packaging and throwing a different logo on it. Frito Lay is creative in a non-functional way IMO. I still love Fritos though!

OK, Lay's is Lay's, not Jays or Rays or any other Regional brand, but at least they took a shot. I thought they were OK, not great, but, again, at least an attempt at something different. I might be a little biased, my sister in law works at the Frito Lay HQ in Plano, and she's always sending us the latest test market product. About 10 years ago, it was Crunch Tators. My kids (then about 10 and 5) loved 'em. I thought they were just like thier crunchy cheez doodles (or whatever they are called) with a little red stuff on them. I don't think they were ever rolled out beyond the DFW area, but in this little corner of NJ, they were a big favorite. ---Ken

We have Dill Pickle Lay's here, as well as (my absolute favorite junk food EVER) Flamin' Hot Cheetos with Lime. I've wondered from time to time if those are available anywhere else but the Southwest.

A few years back the Limon flavored Lay's Chip was a big deal. I was hooked on them for awhile. I haven't seen them for some time. Are they still available in any particular region of the country?

Frito-Lay would like nothing better than to eliminate all the regional businesses if they could. Thank goodness there are some true regionals, even if they are large (like Utz and Jays) to add creativity and corporate variety to the mix. For authentic regional slants on chip flavorings you can't beat Route 11 or Zapp's -- developed and made by local people who live and work in the region instead of MBA's in a corporate office 600 miles away.

There have been alot of Regional potato chip companies eliminated in the last 30 years, BeMoes of Kalamazoo Michigan is one and another is Chesty.

I have noticed that chips come and go. Nothing is permanent. They are here for a while and then they dissappear. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN

Both the Flamin' Cheetos with Limon and Limon Lays are (I'm happy to report) alive and well here in Kansas. I really miss the Buffalo Wild Wing Flavored Ruffles.

In Minnesota we have Old Dutch Potato Chips, they have been around for as long as I can remember. My favorite, besides the plain chips, is Onion & Garlic. MMMmmmm. When I went away to college I was devestated that no one in Colorado had ever heard of them. They kept directing me to the boring "Sour cream & Onion". Not the same. These don't "come & go". I'm almost 50 and I remember them from childhood (also bought a bag last week).

Here in northeast Ohio, we have Ray's potato chips, most notably in garlic flavored and ketchup flavored. Both are pretty darn good! they also make a "Funion" which I think is even better than the real thing, and half the price. the bags everyone else sells for ninety nine cents are fifty cents by Rays.
