Legendary So Cal eatery in Highway Patrol

So Cal residents are surely aware of Cafe Saugus in the Santa Clarita Valley nearby Magic Mountain. It was founded in the early 1900s or so and is considered the longest continous serving eatery surpassing another institution, The Pantry of Dwntwn L A.
 
I recently acquired a DVD box set of Season One-Highway Patrol, a show that I watched in its first runs as an adolesceent in the 50s and then in reruns throughout the 60s. Although, frequently filmed in the Culver City area and western and or northern  San Fernando Valley it's difficult to i d the places because it was surely different in the 50s.  One episode though had a recognizable landmark, Cafe Saugus

I'm in the process of transferring all of my old videotapes to DVDs, and the other day this project led to my watching three episodes of Highway Patrol, including one with a young pre-Rawhide Clint Eastwood. I've always loved this show, and I'd really like to add the entire series to my DVD library. Could you tell me where you obtained your first season box set? Are other seasons available?

Highway Patrol Season one can be seen on your computer at IMBD. Sling or TV.com Earlier this year there was an offcially released DVD box set of season one. There are also unauthorized DVDs of all 4 seasons on e-bay or I Offer of various quality levels. The latter is also excellent for other classic 1950 and 60 TV shows as well as  films of all eras, an excellent resource for oldies but goodies
 
I know that Eastwood eps of H P, its cycle of terror, 1st season, a Wild One themed episode, except Clint wasn't a "bad guy"
 
Highway Patrol was ahead of the action curve for mid-50s TV,  real highway chase scenes with trucks, trains, copters, then came the Whirylbirds 2 years later

Interesting psychology in regard to reviews. It seems like each reviewer after reading the previous reviews decides to pile on. Greasy was the big theme but when you look at the one posted photo of a breakfast omelet and hash browns it looks fairly normal.

I remember when U.S. Army Air Corps Private Broderick Crawford used to get drunk and start bar fights at Jocko Sullivan's in New Haven.

Michael, He was a bit 'Portly' for an aircrew member, wasn't he?  I mean would the cloth and bamboo airframe of the 'Wright Flyer' support his weight?  (yeah, I know all about the pot calling the kettle, etc etc )

All I can faintly remember about Highway Patrol was Broderick Crawford leaning over an open police car door and gruffly going, "ummm go urrr mm get 'm mmrr rrrrr" in the radio mic.

I believe he was just an announcer attached to Capt. Glen Miller's Army Air Corps band at Yale. And yes, I used to go to downtown New Haven often to catch the Glenn Miller Band march on the Green, often playing the St. Louis Blues March, and to enjoy the singing of some unit member named Tony Martin.

I remember when my Dad and Brod used to toss back more than a few. Both of them were legendary drinkers.

Hey, thanks for that link to the Sling site with the old Highway Patrol Episodes online. I just watched a couple of 'em. I haven't seen that show since I was a kid in the 50's. Very enjoyable nostaligia trip!

I also read up a bit on Broderick Crawford, seems like he was quite a piece of work. I wonder if anyone ever wrote a biography of him?

Now I gotta hunt down that Saturday Night Live episode he hosted back in '77 or so.

He was the host for episode 17 of season 2 with a New orleans flavored theme, Dr John and the Meters were the music guests. SNL Seas 2 is out on DVD and also can be seen on line at the same sites I cited above
 
Curiously one of Broderick's last role was portraying the cantakarous(sic) and shady J Edgar Hoover, a perfect fit in Hoover's bio flix that was sanitized to make Hoover look benovelent

Yes, thanks. I found it as an "Instant Watch" on Netflix. Interesting, and it was fun to see the RCO All Stars (with Dr. John and Levon Helm) and the Meters.
