Lemonade Stands: why not Soda Stands?

A friend who is has a bit of a phobia about germs, long ago, managed to get me to never drink lemonade from a kid's lemonade stand (I'll buy it, especially from fundraisers, pretend to take a sip and like it, and toss it as soon as I'm out of sight). Essentially, especially if there is no adult present, kids are not famous for their sanitary habits.

But, a number of years back, I took a look at the numbers. Lemonade, other than the questionable sanitation, is relatively expensive to make, especially compared to cans of soda bought on sale or using store brands. It would not only be far more sanitary, but also far more potentially profitable, if the kids sold cans of soda instead of home made lemonade.

Yet, you never see kids with a front yard "soda stand." So, I figure there is a good probability that there are factors that I am not seeing.

Can anybody enlighten me?

Do you know what lives on the tops of those cans?

I've seen soda stands in front of garage sales.

A couple of years ago in the dead heat of the summer, there was a gentleman who was out of work.  He stood on the corner of Ventura and Sepulveda (A very busy intersection in an affluent neighborhood) and sold bottles of cold water for $1 each while holding up his out of work and looking for a job sign.

Took him about 3 weeks to land a job with someone who drove by.

Not soda, but you made me remember it.

I've seen both down here. Not as kid's venues, but by roadside and intersection peddlers that also peddle everything from bags of fruits, vegetables, and fresh cut flowers. That's quite popular here to be standing at a red light and someone holding bottles of water or cans of soda walking between the cars. Bottles of water, even store brand cans of Soda.

The last light at the intersection where you make a right for Newport Mall or go straight for the Holland Tunnel in Jersey City...you can buy pretty much anything.

Water...a flag for any/every country...soda...candy...newspaper...batteries (I don't even want to ask). Who knows what else...really. The light is long.

I have literally never seen, outside of a movie or on TV, a lemonade stand. Fruits and vegetables or flowers and plants in front of people's houses? All the time. Never in my life have I seen a kid selling anything, though.

I would propose my lemonade stand with the help of Princess the German Shepherd. My Mother always got very nervous about Princess maybe having a word with customers...so my Mother was my only customer.

    She's a good tipper.

I won't stop for lemonade or kool-aid stands either. I don't really care for sweet drinks anyway and I do worry a little about cleanliness.
Though I sometimes see kids selling paintings they did on paper or on rocks, and I'll usually stop and buy one to give to whoever I run into next.

In general, if an adult starts selling drinks on the street, they have to get licenses and HD inspections and all that sort of stuff. Which is why I'm talking about kids setting up stands outside their homes.

I wonder if a lemonade stand EVER turned a profit.
I wonder about parents who'd let their little sweeties set themselves up for disappointment.

When I was young, I had lemonade stands. It wasnt about profit-it was about a little kid getting some quarters to spend at the corner store. My Mom never looked at her cost compared to what I made. She just let me be the little girl that was running her own business.Perfectly innocent.

Well, there is a fundraising organization for kids with cancer that uses lemonade stands as their symbol. It's more like those Celebrity Apprentice stunts where they sell some prosaic item as a front for raising funds for charity.
