They've been out of business for years.Whatever happened to their "50 Year Club" signs? Their Champ Cherry soda was available in cans but I haven't seen it for awhile. Lenny's, from Castor Avenue, is the other oldtime hot dog place still around. They're now in Feasterville.

You can get the hotdog/fishcake combo at Lenny's, Texas Weiners in South Philly, and Johnny's Hots on Delaware Ave.

Levis' was great. My maternal grandfather was a 50 year club member and I always looked forward to being a member when I was going to Levis' as a kid. We'd go to Krass Bros. for clothes and go to Levis' for lunch while they altered my clothes.

Levis' Champ Cherry is now produced by Elliott's Amazing. See www.elliottsamazing.com for more info and a good pic of Levis'.

Levis' used their own brand made by a local company using their own all beef recipe. Not as spicy as Hebrew National and not kosher. There was a local company that no longer exists- Formost- around the corner that probably was the supplier until they went of business.

Old Orginal Levis & Champ Cherry are registered trademarks of Amazing Beverages, Inc.

My Dad and my grandfather, and all his brothers were members of the 50 year club. I was so looking forward to becoming a member too. There is a notation on line about someone making a "virtual plaque". I have emailed them to try to get this started.

A second Levis opened in Jenkintown, about a half hour north of the original one, I want to say during the last five or so years that the original was around. That one also went out of business.

Philly isn't really a big hot dog town in terms of having a lot of places that are famous specifically for hot dogs. Levis was the best-known one.

I actually had my first "fish cake combo" at the Jenkintown Levis outpost. Must have been late 80's or early 90's. I Live in Philly now and they are really hard to find. Even the places that have hot dogs and fish cakes on the menu don't offer them as a combo (you have to ask). Haven't made it to Johnny's Hots yet though.

I've always been really interested in how this concoction came to be.. was Levis the first?

Oh should mention Moe's Hot Dogs in Grays Ferry (in the city) has the combo.. AND champ cherry soda. Great place but be warned they close early in the afternoon - mostly a breakfast & lunch spot for workers.

check out holly's Moe's page for more info-

To clarify the hotdog info about Levis...their hotdogs were made by Formost Kosher Sausage Co at 517 S. 4th Street in Phila. Also Hebrew National hotdogs sold in Philadelphia were also manufactured by Formost along with Foodfair hotdogs, Pantrypride and several other "off brand" names. All the hotdogs were kosher and made the same way. My uncle and father started the business I think in the early 50's and the business (Formost) was sold when Hebrew National Corporate  (in NY) was sold to Riviana Foods, a division of Colgate Polmolave... The name Formost came from my uncle's name, Israel Forman. They were great hotdogs!! No one in the family remains in the food business.

For some reason, I have it in my mind that Levi's was where they filmed the hot dog shop scene in the movie Witness.  I could easily be wrong about this.
