Liberty Fries

Every place I have been to lately has changed their menu from French Fries to "Liberty Fries". I understand sentiment as I was a member of the Air Force and I certainly am patriotic, but isn't that carrying it a bit far. Anyway, it appears the USA did not need them anyway. It appears by what I am reading that the French are coming back into the fold. Perhaps it will die down and if it doesn't, I wonder where it will lead to? I have heard all the French jokes regarding French's Mustard which has nothing to do with France except they are both yellow. It appears to me as it could lead for tit for tat!!! I have spent a lot of time in Europe and for some reasons which I cannot explain, fries or frytes are better in Germany and France than here. Maybe it is the potatoes, I ain't sure. I wonder if the French will quit selling California wine, which incidentally in my own opinion is better than any French wine. It certainly is grown under better conditions with no humidity and in a arid condition where moisture is controlled. You hear the phrase regarding French wines, It was a very good year. I wonder if that was because of too much rain or no rain. I guess that is not the case in Napa, cause it don't rain much there and any moisture they get comes from irrigation!! Just my personal thoughts and God bless the USA Paul E. Smith

The term "french" in this case, is a bit of a misnomer, because the term refers to the method of preparation "frenching", and not the country of origin, which is believed to be Belgium. While I personally have plenty of strong political opinions, I leave them at the door when I come to Roadfood.com, as I consider it a haven away from the daily grind. Best Wishes LOL! I should really pay closer attention to whom I"m replying to! I didn't see ya there Sundancer, and here I am lecturing you on the origins of French Fries.. sorry bud! Besides, the only person I'm probably in sync with politically on this board is the Mayor anyhow..heheeh.

And now the Belgian Frite craze has reached America, but hasn't seemed to spread beyond New York yet! I've heard stories that make me ready to fly out there just to get some! I do love the Belgian mayo that goes with em..it's different from american mayo, more flavor, not as gummy. I remember a funny scene in a movie, where the mom made a 'traditional' 'french' dinner for a foreign exchange student, I think it consisted of French Fries, French Bread, and French Dressing.!

A lunch of pomme frites and mussels is one of the ultimate lunches. I agree with Jenn that leaving political opinions is what this forum is all about. Good food knows no borders.

There are certain places in NY that you can get real Belgian Frites (serious french fries), fried twice, the right way, and that offer more sauces to dip in than you can shake a stick at.

In Syracuse, a restaurant known as Alto Cinco changed the name of their "texas fries" to "plutocracy fries".

Yes, they do go well with mussels!!! There was a Belgian fries place on South Street in Philadelphia, with a variety of dipping sauces---mostly mayonnaise-based, that was very good! But it's gone. Now, you can get 'em in the city at the few Belgian bars. Also at the wonderful Monk's who feature trappist ales in their "church-like" back room.

Belgian fries which refers to the mayo thing must not have any skin. Blanched at 250F then refried at 375 in non other than peanut oil or beef tallow. McD's use to use beef tallow till the "run a marathon before I die crowd" stepped in.

It is from the movie "Better Off Dead" with a young John Cusack, and one of my favorite guilty pleasure actors, Curtis "Booger" Armstrong.

Haven't had a decent french fry since the "I want to live forever" people got rid of beef tallow. Fish and Frys must have beef tallow..... I WANT MY DA** BEEF TALLOW!!!!!!!!! A good friend of mine handed me a note with this written on it: "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, Champagne in one hand- strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming WOO HOO- WHAT A RIDE!

Here in our Appalachian pocket of the Midwest (or "the Great Mid-Nowhere" as my English friend up north in Akron calls it), we read about "Liberty Fries" in the paper, had a chuckle, and life went on. No changes on the local menus though. You could call them "Devil Fries", "Caca Fries", or "Casket Fries" and the local populace would still gorge themselves on them in their lipid-denial feeding frenzies...

There is a great place in NYC at the corner of 2nd Ave and 7th Street, that has the fries and the sauces. At least it was there last time I was in New York. After the fries, go around the corner to the Burp Castle, a monastery themed beer hall, where gregorian chants echo in a vow of silence atmosphere as you are served by monks weraring the long brown robes. They have a choice of about 300 beers. quote:Originally posted by Rayme quote:Originally posted by Jennifer_4 <blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">Originally posted by yumbo <blockquote id="quote"><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id="quote">quote:<hr height="1" noshade id="quote">Originally posted by Jennifer_4 And now the Belgian Frite craze has reached America, but hasn't seemed to spread beyond New York yet! Has anyone heard of the Lafayette fry, seems to be the rage on the west coast, probably also catching on in New York. Something about Patriotism and France.

There's a BBQ place in Valhalla, New York, that opened quite recently that has "freedom fries" on the menu. Ridiculous, IMO. Normally I don't eat fries but when I'm there I deliberately ask for FRENCH fries. Incidentally, Grampa Simpson's bit about "liberty cabbage" really happened during WWI, if Betty Smith's novel "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" is accurate, and I imagine it is, since verisimilitude is what makes the book great...

Can I just say that I'm really sick and tired of the whole "More Patriotic Than Thou" thing? Particularly now that we know France was right and there were no WMDs. Can't we let the fries thing drop? It was stupid anyway. They have nothing whatever to do with "Fronch . . .fries, Fronch . . . bread, Fronch . . . dressing," or even paint thinner. Sheesh. Okay, off soap box. lol
