Liehs and Steigerwalds: "Nations Best Hot Dog"! Wed, 02/9/05 4:31 PM (permalink)
Or so says David Rosengarten...I saw this on the local Syracuse news this morning, and have been trying to locate the source. I don't know where or why he said it.

Anyone out there see this?

It is probably from his own newsletter--The Rosengarten Report.

Gotta be a subscriber to see his World's Best list, though.

Well, I'm not a subscriber, so hopefully someone can fill us in.

I don't know who died and left David the be-all and see-all of hot dogs, but major kudos to my local meat market for making a hot dog that gets national attention. I'll have to stop in, and buy some to celebrate!

It makes a central new yorker proud!

I'm pretty sure that this was from his newsletter 2 years ago. I saw some advertisements for his newsletter a couple of weeks ago in the mail, and there was a short summary of the issue that highlighted hot dogs. It was the same one that I ordered from 2 years ago. Liehs & Steigerwald was tied for first with Schaller & Weber for German style beef and pork dogs, which David refers to as "baloney dogs". Boars Head and Lobel's were tied for first in the all beef category David referred to as "New York/Chicago style". There was also another category called Coarse dogs.

In the article, David states that he prefers the all beef style. All dogs were boiled, which I don't think is a good way of heating lighter tasting, less agressively spiced beef/pork dogs. Thumann's, which is my favorite in the style, was not included.
