Lloyd's pre-packed bbq'd ribs

Avoid Lloyd's.

These were in the meat section near the bacon and kolbasi; full racks of cooked ribs with sauce, ready to heat and eat.

Yuck.

The ribs were of an odd texture, hard to describe; not meaty, but just strange. Maybe like biting into bulk bologna? There was no pleasure to the bite. The flavor was highly processed and unappealing. The sauce was tomatoey and bland.

I don't know where I'd read good things about this product, but I had, and thaat was why I tried them. Live and learn. I ate three ribs from a $14 rack and threw the rest away.

Thanks for the heads-up, Mosca. I don't think their shredded products in the little tubs are any better!

I have tried them as well and thought they were terrible too. I have come to believe that the best ribs are the ones you make yourself.

QFan, the little tubs are actually better. If there was a scale of inedibleness, I'd rate the tubs as better then the ribs. I would finish a meal of the shredded product, but not start another one; I wouldn't (and didn't) finish a meal of the ribs.

Smithfield is decent if you can find it. The tubs, I mean.

Trader Joe's has ribs i actually thought good enough to buy twice. Good in a pinch.

The only decent store bought ribs I have tried are the rotisseire ribs from Sam's. Not as good as homemade but certainly edible. We do not have a Costco here but I imagine they do them as well.

Avoid pre-cooked packaged anything....EXCEPT for Boar's head ribs...if you can find them...they are cooked and vacuum packed and delicious...but hard to find.

We have a meat market/butcher shop called "Meats by John and Wayne" that has a Wed special of $2.99/lb for ribs they smoke right there at the shop. I hear them every Wed on the radio while I'm going to work and man, you just want to drool. Also make over 20 kinds of brats, etc. I have to make time to get over there!

Yep Lloyds are lousy. We don't have any decent supermarket prepared ribs around here. Did get some pretty good ones from the rotisserie at Fresh Market while visiting Asheville, NC

The Sam's ribs are cooked by the store, I'm pretty certain. namret, the Lloyd's ribs are also cooked and vacuum packed; I would trust Boar's Head, though. And everything I've had cooked and pre-packaged from Dinosaur has been outstanding, as close to home made as you could imagine. I have yet to write up their pulled pork, but it is absolutely fantastic.

I didnt care for the tubs also..
After trying that, I came to the firm belief that cooking ones own is the ONLY way to go besides take out from a restaurant.

I found the tubs to be way too sweet. Makes me kringe. My brother swears by the ribs though. I personally have never had them. Maybe he likes baloney with bones.

Althought it's been a while I remember liking the packaged ribs from Cincinnati's Montgomery Inn.

Costco here sells Lloyd's , I can't believe it, it's such out and out crap, inedible junk, spit out awful, don't feed this crud to a maximum security lifer or he'll sue you and win terrible, North Korea would turn down this swill even if we paid them to eat it horrible, would make a Hyena retch disgusting, should be banned by the EPA as a toxic substance crummy...has nice packaging though !

Ces1948 mentioned above the supermarket prepared version he liked from Fresh Market in Asheville. We have a Fresh Market here in our area. Guess I'll have to give that a try. The one here has both ribs and pulled pork which they say they smoke themselves. Will let the RF-ers know the results of my taste test.

Almost any Mass Produced, Marinated and Vac Packed meats (Like Lloyds) will be lousy because they sit for weeks in the distribution chain and the marinade. No matter how "Vac Packed" the product, it still breaks down the enzymes in the meat and turns it to mush. (Not to mention the poor quality of the marinade.) Same goes for Marinated Pork Tenders. Some of the "Up-Scale" products mentioned above are OK because the time from processing to use is shorter, especially if you order it from the processor.

I can't recall if H.E.B.Grocery Stores has the ribs,
but they do have already cooked brisket,as well as seasoned brisket ready to cook and plain briskets.H.E.B. Brand,that is.Haven't seen Lloyd's there,but have at Walmart.
You can also buy from H.E.B. already cooked pork roast and pot roast,
enchiladas,chicken in mole,carnitas(cooked porkmexican style)and even their own brand of pizzas,fruit bars,and tv dinners.Of course these items are not made by them,but for H.E.B.
I bought the carnitas when it was on sale.Very good,not mushy had a nice flavour.I have had their whole fruit mango and strawberry bars,very good as well.As good as Dreyers.I want to try next their lime and coconut pineapple bars.
I am not a fan of LLoyd's stuff.Tried their barbacoa once.It wasn't bad,but I think they have barbacoa at a couple of the local mexican restaurants that's better.

I do the Lloyd's pork and beef tubs sometimes but I heat them with some non sweet hickory BBQ sauce. It is a bit too sweet by itself. I don't think it's all that bad when reheated right. I have not tried the ribs.

Sadler's Smokehouse makes a great smoked brisket! It comes frozen. It's sold at Sam's or Cosco I think? My local Brookshires deli sells it. They slow cook it more in their oven. I like all the Sadler's products I've tried.

John the closest Costco to you is Jacksonville or Altamonte Springs

Thanks Dandy, that's a little too far, I'll stick with Sam's. Costco was going to open a store here some time ago, never did??

Actually, I tend to like Lloyds baby back ribs, but NOT their regular ribs. Their tubs of BBQ are really bad. I've not found another packaged rib that I'd buy a second time.

Then again, I've only found three places for excellent ribs - House of Ribs in Johnson City, TN and Dreamland in Tuscaloosa, AL and Roswell, GA.

Lloyd's are not horrible but you can make better with little trouble.
mjambro, you are right, the House of Ribs in Johnson City rocks! I lived there briefly and forgot all about it!

That's funny...they are about 2 miles from me and I haven't made the time to try them yet. So many ribs..so little time.

How can I pass now with two recommendations...sounds like lunch tomorrow.

Everyone's different.....We love those Lloyd's ribs! We serve them up with a big batch of rice and make a mess eatin' those delicious saucy ribs....MMMMMM GOOD!!!!

hey ces...sad to report that the experience at house of ribs was not a good one. All the food was over cooked and the ribs were nothing special on this visit.

BUT, this was lunch and I'm going to try a slab of ribs during their dinner hour sometime in the next two weeks.
