Local Krispy Kreme has closed... Sat, 08/4/07 11:18 PM (permalink)
Today I was driving by a local shopping center and did a double-take. The building where the second Krispy Kreme in our area had opened a few years ago was being converted to a jewelry store! I was blown away. I wasn't aware that Krispy Kremes ever closed!

I had noticed a few times passing by that the parking lot and line had very few cars, but the local Lone Star Bakery, home of the famous Round Rock Donuts, is ALWAYS busy.

Score this victory for a local "mom and pop".

They built a Krispy Kreme in Malden, MA outside Boston a few years back... it was our first one in the area and it was a BIG deal. It was in the news and was packed for months... and then about maybe two years into it's life, it closed!!

I don't know of another location but I actually didn't think the one they had was all that great. Certainly wasn't central. But it was strange how popular it was (and around the clock too), and then not, I guess.

Of all the other MA locals on here, someone may know better about all this than I...?

Round Rock doughnuts are the best. I can attest to that as I have been there many times thanks to Bushie's introduction.

Regardless, there is not a Round Rock doughnut place in Knoxville and I sure do enjoy a hot Krispy Kreme. They are at their best when they are hot.

I use to be able to eat six of them but anymore, about one is all I can do.

I don't know the whole story, but all of the KK's in Mass and RI have closed up except the ones in Cranston RI and maybe the one in Dedham MA. There was the one in Medford and one in Sauguse, and one at the Pru in Boston, all closed.

I guess they could not compete with the 500 pound gorilla (DD's).

I think this has been discussed before, but the KK collapse was another big corporate blunder. Here in Mass. they pretty well screwed the franchisees who were doing a good business but couldn't afford to pay corporate fees and rent. I think there was a lawsuit but I don't know if it ever went anywhere.

We live about 5 miles from the KK in Dedham Mass. Or, I should say, the "former" KK in Dedham Mass. It was the last of the 3 Mass stores and it must've closed in the past month or so.

Today, I drove by one of the KK's where they make their doughnuts.

I should have stopped in and got a fresh one. You see so many of them boxed in stores now.. Dont know how fresh they really are that way. Just like many of the DD's shops that get theirs shipped in from a central bakery....
One of my fondest childhood memories in the 60's was mom driving us to the KK "factory" as I called it and getting a fresh one right off the line.
I can still smell them, just like the smell of fresh bread coming from the Holsum Bakery on US 1 near the University of Miami..
Sadly, they moved it from that location.
I do think it is near Hialeah now....Oh, I just read that it was closed in July 2005....That was a part of Miami history.
                Sorry to get off topic....
Now, back to your regulary scheduled programming.

The Krispy Kreme in the Mall of America closed and I think a few others in Minneapolis/St. Paul have as well. Target was one of the first to have them in their stores and then they started popping up in just about every store. The Holiday service stations in the Twin Cities are dropping them as of this month. I think Target has already dropped them. They were kind of a flash in the pan. But the truth is their appeal was when the red light came on you could get them hot and fresh and cars lined up to get them in the drive through. They were good that way but once cooled they were nothing special and branching out in store distribution destroyed their mystique.

Bushie, they had a Krispy Creme on Austin Highway in San Antonio but that closed. The one on Loop 1604 and USHWY281 is still open.
The local Shell station sells krispy Cremes,as does Walmart.
When we buy donuts at work, they usually get them from Shipley's on IH35 acroos from H.E.B.Or sometimes from Walmart or H.E.B.
I just think they expanded too much and too fast.

The Cranston RI store, which was the only one in RI, closed up a few weeks ago. The closest one now is at Mohegan Sun Casino.

I like Krispy Kreme doughnuts,But I prefer Dunkin Donuts. DD has a better selection and taste than KK in My opinion.

Philadelphia's KKs have been closed for a few years now, after only being here for two or three years. The one nearest my house was at Cottman Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard. Now it's... a Dunkin.

I agree on the choice options with DD. The selection is huge and their breakfast has improved.

Nobody can improve on the KK hot doughnut option when the red light is on.

KK still rules in my area. DD has folded in the town that I work in. Agreed though, I only would buy KK at a KK location vs. outlets. The life of a KK glazed is about 6 hours, IMO. I do not like cake based doughnuts.

Our KK in Bristol, TN/VA closed a couple of years ago. At that time the franchise owner said the building owner had raised his rent so high he could no longer operate, he also said he was doing great business. Funny thing though here it is a couple years later and that building still sits empty and that franchise owner never opened in another location.

They've been closing everywhere because the locations aren't earning enough prfit. Also, the compnay has had issues when it comes to the Finances.

The location nearest to me Outside Detroit closed 3 Years ago and it still sits vacant.
