I like the Chicken Pie Shop in Fresno and Cope's Knotty Pine Cafe in Bakersfield.

Bakersfield is not necessarily about American Comfort Food. Instead, the best place for a comfort food meal is Noriega's. They are a Basque family restaurant, with meals that are as "comfort food" as you can get. All meals are served family style, with a rotating menu plus appetizers. You're sat at group tables, sharing the food. It is delicious, filling and even includes some wine. Well worth trying.
In Fresno, I've had good meat pies at the Berrock Shop. I wish I could remember the Armenian restaurant where I met Jennifer4, hopefully she'll see this because she is a great resource for Fresno and knows her way around the multitude of delicious Armenian places there.
Are you interested in other places on 99----I do have suggestions in Kingsburg (Little Sweden), south of Fresno and Tulare too. In Reno, ---I'm going there in a few weeks and so far Peg's Glorified Ham and Eggs looks like it will be my number one choice for breakfast and lunch. I'm a sucker for a good CFS!

Sounds like a trip on the San Joaquin Amtrak line.

J's Place in Bakersfield has comforted me with outstanding soul food many times over thanks to a tip from L2B...

Our favorite place in Bakersfield is HODEL'S on the north edge of town just a block off the 99, Here's the website. Solid American food that even includes cottage cheese in lime Jello  !

Ha!!  I completely forgot about J's Place for soul food.  Mmmmm boy.  They don't have all items every day, so flexibility will be helpful!

I'd be as flexible as an Olympic gymnast for the neck bones...dressing & caramel cake.

    Shoo.

I have dim memories of going past this place and making a mental note of it...(but forgot)...

That pile of beef looks good...

Sour cream on taco's...?    (those aren't "taquito's"...taquitos are **rolled** like a cigar)

Real (Mexican campesino) tacos don't have sour cream, tomatoes, lettuce, or cheese...those contaminents are a gringo thing... usually just carne, cebolla, cilantro, & salsa...I guess I'm spoiled by eating where (real) Mexicans eat...

I know of a place in Hopland that has beans in their taco's...the owner/operator I think is from Israel (not exactly taco country)..

Too bad Amtrak doesn't go there... the only time Amtrak goes through Tehachapi is when there is a detour on the normal Coast Starlate routes...

The Coast Starlight did a "service" route through the Tehachapi Loop in September while I was there. A shame it doesn't happen very often since the Tehachapi Loop is one of the 7 railroad wonders of the world.

Otherwise Amtrak has bus service to/from Tehachapi/Bakersfield.

This is where the pile goes for Red House...

Jesus didn't do to the tacos. He's kind enough to provide fixins for Jersey gringas...like myself. I'm a sinner....not a Saint.

Yes, every now & then the Coast Starlate does the Tehachapi route, usually due to track work on the normal UP route...great rare mileage. Another rare trip is coming up in the Feather River Canyon this August for Portola Railroad Days.

If my travel plans unfold as desired, I might be going by Red  House around lunchtime...

Red House shares a parking lot with Village Grill. That's a nice little a Roadfood place for a cup of coffee & they brew some really good iced tea....

Chalk of the Walk happens in the month of August. It's likely you'll see some beautiful artwork related to trains on the sidewalks in that area. This is from last August...

For Mexican try Sal's in Selma, don't bother with the Fresno locations.

I've been gone 16 years now, too many of the old favorites are gone.
