Long John Silvers gone from San Antonio

I noticed a couple of weeks ago, that the Long John's Silvers on Pat Booker Road in Universal City was shut down. I thought it odd, since it seemed the place had been busy. In this weeks Food section of the San Antonio Express News, it listed all the Long John's gone in San Antonio. However, in Converse and New Braufels are combo Long John and A&W restaurants which are still in business. So I guess these closed Long John's might have been a franchise deal, rather than company owned. I also saw we now have Hungery Howie's pizzas and Subs in town.

Most of the LJS's disappeared from the NY Metro area years ago. The only one I know of is a combo out in Hicksville, Long Island that also has a KFC. While eating my dreadful LJS meal near the counter, I noticed that 90% of the orders were for KFC items. I don't think many people will still pay $6.00 for a value meal around here that consists mostly of a lot of breading on a tiny amount of poor quality seafood.

LJS seems to be holding their own in Dayton metro. no expansion but no closures ive noticed. they did shut the one in Xenai a few years back butits still vacant. ive been disappointed wwith them the past few years. maybe my taster has changed, but i gut reflux becauses they seem so greasey. What i miss are churches chicken. One of the few we do have just shut down(it was an odd pairing-White Castle/Churches) Also popeyes are very scarce in this neck of the woods. i havent seen a Jim Dandys since the early 80's. i used to think the spicey crispy chicken they had was the whip. britt

The LGS in Watertown NY has also packed it in recently and left a stack of unpaid bills from employees and suppliers................. Also the neighboring Dennys has packed it in........... Reports on the local news quoting that the rent alone at that location was $20,000 a month!!!!!!!! No great loss on either location !

In many cases the coming and going of a franchised-based chain in any area may have little to do with the home-corporation, and a lot to do with the local person or group who hold the franchising rights to a city or region. In this day of fast growing (and fading) business development the rise and fall of franchises can be a geographic lesson as well as a study of business practices. Complicate that with the high number of mergers in this food-area and you get a complex study that (again) may not actually have been connected to the Home Corporation.

I think it's that way everywhere. A locally owned chain of about six units of Taco Bell and another of Boston Market closed here a couple years ago and that was the case. What I don't understand is although some didn't do great, each had maybe two that were always busy for many years right until the end so I wonder why Yum Brands and Boston Chicken didn't jump in and continue the cash flow but the locations have sat empty. All I can figure is it's a legal thing, but you'd think the landlords must not be very happy about it.

As for Long John Silver's, We tried it once and it seemed like every single item was deep fried and we had trouble tasting the difference. HollyDolly mentioned Converse above and I think Long John's could have shredded an old sneaker and fried it up and I'm not sure I would be able to tell.

No Talent Yeah I agree about the quality...or lack of it. In our area (Louisville) there are two FF chains that deal in seafood. LJS and Capt. D's. Capt D's surpasses LJS by a mile thats for sure. However we have several decent fish and seafood restaurants in the area as well, so we fare pretty well when looking for something fishy for dinner !

LJS's in Knoxville is not good. It is like buying fish sticks except larger. The quality and taste is not the same as Captain D's. Paul E. Smith Knoxville, TN
