Don't even think of putting jellybeans in your cupcakes...it's already been done (that's how Guy won his contest)...
 
Being in front of the camera is the wrong place for me, but, I *do* admire the production skills involved with the shows they produce in general, and the DDD show in particular...such as the rock-surf music in the background, the camera shots, and the excellent editing...and an extrovert talking head (host)...the production Directors really make it stand out in comparison to the typical cooking shows...as a broadcast professional, I can appreciate all that goes into it...(my best skill, aside from being a radio DJ, is a video editor)...
 
Imagine Julia Childs cooking shows jazzed up by the DDD production team...(???)
 
Would she drive a Peugeot, wear an apron from the French Laundry, and bling from Tiffany...???

I think those questions are reasonable considering it's a casting "cattle call"...they really want somebody who is not only a "foodie" but also outgoing enough to have already established at least some kind of presence, even if only online...

Borrow, rent, or buy one...they're not that expensive these days...did you know that a feature movie was made with a (highly tricked out) smart phone camera...???  Granted that had a super high quality modified broadcast lens and a special eyepiece that fed a video recorder...
 
1 out of 1,000 persons WILL be able to answer those questions with ease...and if you gather up 100 of these type people, a handful will actually have what it REALLY takes...
 
Have you noticed that even some of the "losers" of those chopped and network star shows end up with a Tv show...???  They might not "win" but still have enough skills that can be built upon...usually they just need to grow as "Talent"  i.e  look at the camera more, include the name of the show / network more often, be able to read off a teleprompter (not a natural skill, but can be learned)...not everybody is a great chef and not everybody is a "natural" when it comes to being Talent, so being a combination of the two does require work, insight, introspection, talent, curiosity, and dedication...not impossible for the right person...

You can tell the vintage of his shows by how many tattoos on his arms...
 
I speculate that the '67 Camero is flat bed trucked from location to location...no plate on the front means it's not street legal for California, so I don't know what state it's registered in...perhaps they draw a 1 day DMV permit for each location from whatever state they're in (???)...the car is his trademark so I think it's not run on the street very much from one shooting (filming) location to the next...
 
He's a native of Ferndale (Humboldt County) and lives in the Santa Rosa area (Sonoma County) where he has a couple of restaurants...
