Los Angeles, CA -> Austin, TX via I-10. Wed, 06/24/09 2:09 AM (permalink)
Hello!

I'm going to be roadtripping from Los Angeles, CA to Austin, TX. Most of this trip will be following Interstate-10. I was wondering if anyone had any restaurant suggestions that don't stray too far from the highway..? The only "must-try" place that I've found so far has been H&H Car Wash in El Paso, TX. Anything else..?

Thanks!

The Little Diner in Canutillo, TX is excellent and is five minutes at most off of the interstate.

I highly recommend that you save your appetite until you get to Austin. There is too much to eat here....

you Must check out Bisbee Ar!!---killer coffee-great folks-great shop, bars, music artist--overall a great town--and spend the night here---/www.roadsideamerica.com/tip/6429  The Shady Dell RV Park and Dot's Diner!!--its a classic RV park full of classic trailers that are all restored and furnished in period furnishing--my favorite motel!!--and the diner is a 1957 Valentine that they brought out from LA when it was "retired"--and reswtored nicely--youcan even spend the night in an old dry docked wooden Chris Craft boat---but i reccomend callin and making reservations---it can get packed
and get coffee here--www.bisbeecoffee.com/  coffee that is as good as yoiu can get anywhere in the world!
Bisbee is a great stop and just south of 10 at Tombstone---trust on this--if you like Austin--you will like Bisbee!!

I can totally guide you through Az & El Paso but you need to give more info like are you making the drive straight through or are you planning to stay at a motel/hotel. also what will your drive be back. H&H blows Little Dinner out of the water, fyi

El Paso has great Mexican food! If you're staying overnight, ask the motel staff (usually Mexican, anyway) about the really good Mexican restaurant thats in a, house. Also, try looking on Chowhound.com. Do a "Chowhound search" for, El Paso, Texas.
              About 160 pages come up.
Sorry, it's the best I can do for, El Paso.  You can also go across the border to Juarez. Again, if you're staying overnight, leave your car at the motel and have a taxi take you across and, pick you up. Juarez is not unsafe like Tijuana but, it's still Mexico. No offense meant.

Thanks for all of the quick replies and suggestions! I'm definitely looking forward to the food in Austin! It's just along the way that I've been finding the options to be scarcer.

We're planning on tunneling straight through the 20 hour drive to Austin. It won't be daylight until we hit the Tucson area so any suggestions between there and Austin would probably be most appropriate. The return drive is irrelevant as we will be flying back.

The best breakfast burrito I ever had was in Deming, NM. Couldn't tell you where now, except it was along the main drag.

As I said I know Phoenix, Tucson & El Paso very very well,

                    El Paso’s Best

                    1) Pepe’s Tamales

                    2) Dominguez: The red cheese enchiladas

                    3) H&H Coffee Shop: the mexican plate, H&H closes @ 3pm

                    4) Franky’s: The Huevos Rancheros & flan: this is THE place 2 have breakfast in EP

                    5) Riviera: everything

from what your telling me this is what I'd do if I were u. eat @ H&H if they're closed go to Dominguez. Then grab like a dozen of Pepe's Tamales 4 the road. all 3 places are right off the 1-10 like less than 1/8 a mile. Have a good/safe trip :)

1 more thing fyi, Pepe's is east on the 1-10 after H&H so u won't have to backtrack.
