Love my Weber, but Sun, 05/28/06 6:21 AM (permalink)
Hello

Love my Weber grill, but it is such a pain in the butt emptying the ash tray, those little wire clips and usually spilling some ash trying to angle it out. Many years ago there was a competiter to Weber called The Happy Cooker, I owned one for many years, it had an interal ash tray you just lifed out and dumped it and back in.

Any idea,s or suggestions?
Thanks Jim

Time to trade that Weber in for a new one.

I was going to say... My Weber has a removable tray on the bottom (below the cooker) and a handle that sifts the ash out. I wouldnt trade it in for anything! Today she did an awesome job cooking up some dogs, and tommorow she'll be working out with some chicken... Getting rid of my Weber would be like divorcing someone I actually like..

I'll admit that the Weber Silve is a bit of a pain for ash disposal but it is a lot better at doing slow Q. The 3 vents on the bottom allow for much better airflow control.

I suppoe that over the years I must have spilled some ash when emptying the tray of my Weber, but not enough to cause me to want to spend an extra $140 or so to avoid it.

That's the Weber I plan on keeping for the next 50 years ...
You can collect then too ... I have a Jumbo Smokie Joe to camp with
and a lil Smokie Joe just to make a set ...
of course if you got some extra cattle walking around the back yard ...

I bought a galvanized metel can that I put on the ash tray to catch the ash. It fits right under the openinng.

I've got nine Webers. Only one is gas and that is the suitcase traveling model...got it for Holiday Inn points. Got the charcoal suitcasee model and use it once a week when traveling.

Two that I want are the Performer and the Ranch Kettle. Also tried getting one of the Homer Simpson Smokey Joes on Ebay but it went for over a hundred bucks.

Mine are old also, only one has plastic handles...the rest have wooden handles.

I've got a performer and love it...gas start, nice ash dump pot ( as opposed to the flying saucer design).

I'm sorry but seventy bucks for a smokey joe is just a bit too much for me. But thanks.

Felt I should respond to the original question. My Smokey Joes are the only Webers we have that still have the ash catcher. It is part of the support design and not removable. The flying saucer thing hels by the clips are somewhere in the barn but I haven't seen one in ten years.

I build a very small paver brick pad to grill over. Ashes hit the brick...no problem. Once a week (I grill three or four times a week) I dump everything in the grill around the tree of the week. Works for me.
