Tiki, all I could think of upon reading that is the Dick Van Dyke episode where he gets the Honda 50 and encounters the group of bikers who christen him "Robbie Baby". I'm not sure Mary Tyler Moore is built for speed or comfort, however.

Yea, I know what you mean...........sometimes I think the "fast food addicts" are trying to take over!!!! But the most important thing is for all of us to remember to be polite to one another and respect one another.

Since when is a suggestion "controlling"? If I wanted to REALLY be controlling, I would have stayed a moderator and deleted the fast food/chain topics. Really....there are those that post about fast food restaurants on these fora that complain about the negative/anti-fast food responses that they get in response. I can understand them wanting more positive and receptive feedback to their worries about McD's breakfast buffets and tomatoes on their Wendy's burgers...so I really thought they might like to know that there was a place they could go to get such. They can stay here and post if they want. They'll just have to put up with the likes of me, WJ, tiki, and the divine Ms. Katie. Can't even be helpful around here without getting growled at anymore. I am truly thinking about joining i95 in his retirement. Sheesh.

Just you and that i-95 wait until Dad comes home. He'll take care of that "I'm leaving" attitude , and knock it right out of you both. Now, get that look off your face and we'll go to Ma Chezkatie's for dinner. (Now if I only knew who Dad is)

[:p May I humbly suggest some Holiday sympathy for those of us who live so far out in the sticks that we CELEBRATE the opening of a new fast food chain joint? The fact is that if you are cruising, say, I-40 rather than I-95, you better either bring lunch with you (which I often do--say, Banh Mi from Saigon Sandwiches near my other place in SF) or be prepared for the offerings of the chains, especially if you are trying to get somewhere fast and don't want to stop for liesurely sit-down meals at the principle non-chain option in this neck of the woods: Mexican food. Just so you understand, there are a couple of reasons the benighted may stay here. They may feel like they are among friends here and/or they may enjoy reading about all that great food even if they can rarely eat any of it. Meanwhile, they post about what they know and can get--and hope there are enough other deprived roadfooders to appreciate what they can contribute.

In all honesty, despite my occasional (1 X month or less) McDonald's Sausage EggMcMuffin and a Whataburger now & then, I do not partake of FF. I believe all involved in the RF forum have an opinion, though. Perhaps there should be a distinction between old FF places & new FF places (old = > 20yrs. ago). Really now, do the recipes ("fast food creations")on this page really look good? (Fondly thinking about WJ... ) : http://www.jaybrewer.net/fastfoodfever

BT--i have cruised I40 from Arkansas and Oklahoma to California countless times and believe me---you can eat solid top of the line roadfood all the way and never have to set foot in a chain---although i have tried those that i never saw before and the ones that have so many followers at a place like this--like Waffle House--there all ok--but i REALLY TRUELY LIKE REAL HONEST FOOD!!! I adore the slow food movement--i go ape over regional variations in commen foods--the fact that a little place just off the road makes its own cheese or smokes its own meats or grows the sweet potatos in thier pies truly excites me! A breakfast joint in the desert with a guest book that includes folks from blocks away from my home in Calif and my home town in Massachsetts and tibeten monks too and was started in the 50's by chinese immigrants is a treaure to me--or how about a family run ranch that has a place with killer huge burgers from longhorns---VERY low in cholesterol!!!--THAT THEY HAVE BEEN RAISING THER ON THAT LAND FOR ALMOST 1OO YRS.all of this and much much more are all along I40! The reason i come here is that i KNOW that there is always someone out there with a good meal for sale and if i come here--theres a good chance that ANYWHERE i want to go--i can find those spots--with the help of my fellow roadfooders. I too have eaten at chains---i feel that i must--i have a rule in my house---dont bitch about politics if you dont vote!!! I'd be a hypocrit to complain about fast food/coorporate chain resteraunt culture if i didnt know it--heck ive WORKED IN IT--and besides---this is America and we can eat any old crap we want!---or NOT!

quote: I really don't see many posts about these places. They seem to be miniscule in the overall breadth of these forums. I don't understand the aggravation they seem to bring to some of you. There is a really easy solution. The powers that be should just create a new topic folder for chain fast food restaurant topics. Maybe something like "Fast Food...If You Must". The moderators could also redirect any errant postings on those topics to that folder. Then, those who feel sullied by having to read them, could simply NOT CLICK ON IT! Dino

SUNDANCER specifically stated in a previous thread long long ago that in his opinion he doesn't believe that the concentration of Chains and Fast Food places today vs Mom N Pops is not any different than say 30 or 40 years ago. If what BT is saying is true, then that either A. Sundancer is wrong. B. That all the national chains that are around today, existed 30 or 40 years ago in the same frequencey C. There were other national chains existing 30 or 40 years ago at the same magnitude or D. 30 or 40 years ago, there were no restaurants in the sticks and that you had to travel 300 or 400 miles just to find ONE RESTAURANT. Which one is it? A? B? C? or D?. There are no other choices!

just my opinion---but ni personally am sick to death of "red state-blue state" crap----want to talk politics----go to a political site---this is a FOOD site! Good food isnt red or blue--its just GOOD! Me personally---im niether red nor blue---just HUNGRY!!! and as far as Fast food is concerned--the creators of fast food menu's do NOT go in for quality---their whole focus is--uniformity--fast-and cheap! Menu variations in them are usually short lasting experiments and they still depend one the cheap fast burger and fries and supersizing to survive. Yes i took my kids in for Happy meals---i also took them to Chuckie Cheese for Bdays---however now that they have grown.......no thanks

I'm with BT on this one. If your primary focus is driving, in the West there can be precious few options. I can count the places to eat along I-5 between SF and Southern Oregon and Southern Oregon and Portland without much trouble, and the "Roadfood" places to talk about and treasure I can count with my fingers. There just ain't nuttin' out there in the vast reaches. When you hit I- 5 at the 505 turnoff(dunnigan), the towns are 20-30 miles apart, and there's not many undiscovered gems among them. Now if you are talking backwoods exploring, hitting Junk stores and fruit stands, you can do it, but that has to be why you're on that particular road, not getting somewhere on a schedule. If it's a choice between Chain FF and nothing, I'll take chains and make the best of it.

But if your goal is to cover the miles of highway to get somewhere and don't want to waste time exploring the streets of desert towns or detouring off the interstate, you will likely end up eating a lot of food from chains unless you are really familiar with every dining option along the thousands of miles of highway. Again, my solution is usually to pack a lot of food to take with me from home (or restaurants near home).
