Lunch in St. Louis near the Arch Mon, 03/14/11 7:40 PM (permalink)
I am starting to plan a cross-country road trip for over the summer, and on one weekday of 9 hours of driving, I will be passing through St. Louis on I-70 at lunch time.  I thought it might be fun to get takeout somewhere near the St. Louis Arch and eat it on the Gateway Mall picnic-style.  Does anyone have a suggestion on where I can get some cheap and easy-to-eat takeout in close walking distance of the Arch?  Also, how is the parking situation in downtown St. Louis at lunchtime on a weekday?

First, parking at the Arch is usually easy.  If you come later in summer and the river is down, you can park on the river bank in front of the Arch.  If the river is high (or at any time) you can park in the garage at the north end of the grounds.

Second, food is readily available nearby but I'm not too familiar with that immediate area for lunch.  On the north end, you have Laclede's Landing but the food is either bar food or aimed at tourists.  Downtown food is mainly directed at office workers.

One suggestion would be to drive to Soulard first, pick up some take out barbeque at Bogart's, and then drive to the Arch for your lunch.  It's a short drive.

    Slightly further away is Pappy's

The two places I know in that general area are:
      1. Smoki O's BBQ (don't think of walking there, it's a drive, and bring your food to the arch).  1545 North Broadway
      2. Rooster.  Crepes and sandwiches.  1104 Locust.  A bit of a walk from the arch, though.

Thanks for the suggestions!  I don't mind a little bit of a walk... I live in Manhattan, so I'm used to walking all over the city.  Plus it might feel good to get out of the car and walk around for a little while after being in the car all morning!  Anyone know of any other restaurants near the Arch with easy take out food to eat picnic-style?

          Kudos!
          I agree,
There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking a few miles to walk, especially St Louis which I can vouch is a very walkable city! I encourage the walk- even Soulard is walking distance from downtown- I know- I've done it!
