    Well, it is too bad that the dairy is closing, but at least the restaurant will stay open. Those turkey sandwiches looked delicious in the review Michael recently posted.

    Too bad. That whole area has gone through many changes. The Danbury Fair was a popular version of a state fair for Connecticut. Now the Danbury Fair Mall covers the vast region where that once sat. Now we will have more stores that will add nothing to the community.
    I will definitely have to get there before they close up as I live within 30 miles 0f the place.
    On a another note, there is a advertisement for Jim Barbarie's Steak House, a Roadfood recommended place.

    As for the bikers, they will have to travel a couple of miles onto HWY 84 to The Blue Colony Diner. I have been there and it is a great place.

    They have what is called Super Sundays at the Dairy about once a month during the summer. Lots of bikers and their machines, along with merchandise booths. I wonder if that'll relocate. It is a ritual among many locals.

    According to the article, Marcus stopped processing milk at the site in October, 2005. Before that, you would often see Marcus milk at independent supermarkets in Queens, NY. I guess they did what they could to keep their dairy profitable. Just about all of the small milk plants have closed down in this part of the country. Now, a small number of companies bottle all the milk.

    People went to the Marcus site for the restaurant, not the dairy processing plant. With its location along US7 and I-84, and sufficient promotion, they might be able to continue the dairy bar's tradition after redevelopment is complete.

    Marcus dairy supplied the milk to the CT school district I attended. It was good milk, would have been better if it had been COLD! But it was warmish, like all school milk. We called it Mucus Milk for an elmentary-middle school laugh.

    I was passing through Danbury today, so I decided to stop in at the Marcus Dairy Bar. There was a small sign posted at the entrance, and I copied it verbatim:
    "To Marcus Dairy Bar Customers:

    Plans have been submitted for site plan approvals to renovate the property into restaurant and retail space.

    Our Dairy Bar Restaurant will remain open and continue to serve you throughout the permitting process. This process may take a year or more. Plans to renovate, improve, and re-open a new restaurant is included with our permit.

    In the interim, we are priveleged to continue to serve you."

    Their menu and cash register receipt lists their phone number as 203-748-9427. Their menu also lists their web sites:

    So, call before going.

    I don't know what construction codes are like in Danbury. But in Manhattan, I have seen developers build skyscrapers around buildings like the Dairy Bar, and the business remained in operation during construction. It just may not be profitable to keep the restaurant open dring construction with all the juggling that has to be done. Or maybe the company did not explore that option yet.
