Macado's (Lynchburg, VA)

This is a fairly small chain that (still) serves fantastic sandwiches. (so, if the admins want to move it to the chain section...so be it) I used to go to Macado's in Greensboro, NC and loved it. Chain or not, they do it right. Friendly service, awesome selection of sandwiches, which taste great. I got the Stallone (some sandwiches are named after movies and movies stars, others are named after cartoons, 20th century figures, places (like Brooklyn Bridge) etc.) My sandwich had genoa salami, pepperoni, provolone, banana pappers, black olives, oregano, lettuce, tomato...and I think that was it. It was nice sized and tasted great. The kitschy decor consists of black-and-white photos, murals, antiques, and toys, all of which create a fun, light-hearted atmosphere. There was a full bar, which was great, because we definately needed a beer after a long day of listening to HS marching bands. So, if you're in the lower Shenandoah or VA/NC/WV Appalachia, I would highly recommend this place.

There is one in Farmville, Va. I haven't been there since my college days at Hampden-Sydney.

Hello All, Wow, we had one in Harrisonburg, Va. under the name of "Spanky." The sandwich themes were for the old Spanky and Our Gang films of the past. In the late 1960's through the 1990's, Spanky's was a hangout for students at James Madison University. You could always get a good sandwich, beer, and company there. I think momma Macado died, and the family had problems, but they left Harrisonburg after not being able to pay local sales taxes. I miss their food and service. It was a great place. To me, it wasn't a chain, but a family series of restaurants. Take Care, Fieldthistle
