Mail order Christmas ham suggestions please

Does anyone have any suggestions for what they consider an outstanding Holiday ham? We have done the Honeybaked and I don't have anything against it. We live in Florida and I don't know of any local places that make their own. I do liked spiral sliced for it's convenience but that's not vitally important. Nueske's has a 15% off sale going on and I'm tempted but I wasn't that impressed with some other items I've ordered from them in the past. Places with websites would be preferred though I'm sure there are many outstanding places that have no web presence but perhaps have a catalog available. There are also many brands available at the local supermarkets but I really don't know what's good or not.

I've had good luck with Amana Meats from Iowa, not for myself but as gifts I send to friends in various parts of the US. Never any complaints and always lots of complements. I have been to their store in person and have bought directly from them when I am in the area. Another place I recommend is Millrose Country Store. I have been to their restaurant and country store dozens of times, they have wonderful hams amongst many other things but ham is their specialty. Their restaurant is pretty darn good too! This is a link to their online catalog as well as Amana's. http://www.amanameatshop.com/ http://www.millrosecountrystore.com/

I totally agree with chewingthefat-I always get both my country ham and fully cooked ham from Smithfield.

I prefer Kentucky hams to Virginia ones. To me they are sweeter and less salty (although both have the distinctive taste of "country" ham) and, since I had relatives who lived near Lexington when I was growing up, that's what I was raised on. Therefore, in recent years I order them from Broadbent: http://www.broadbenthams.com/ They have hams that are uncooked, cooked, cooked & sliced. They also offer what they call "city hams" for those who don't like the country taste. And they have a range of other pork and non-pork products from bacon and sausage to jams and jellies and biscuit mixes.

If you want a southern style salty dry aged ham stick with those southern places that do it best - a few are mentioned above. If you want a lightly smoked ham, not aged then I'd recommend Harrington's, they are excellent. In fact, I've ordered one for the holidays. Also, they've been running an ad for a ham for $39 vs, the usual $50 or so. Lots of people like the convenience of the pre-cooked spiral sliced ham which costs only a few bucks extra. I prefer to cook my own ham and to slice the ham thin or thick depending on what we are doing with it. Cheers, John

What do you want. City or Country. Anywhere and been visited by many here for Country Hams and products is Benton's. Many big name Chefs order their hams from them. Me, just send gift Bacon. https://bentonshams.com/order/index.php

In lieu of flowers, bacon donations will be greatly appreciated! Smithfield sells Hams other than Country, honey spiral sliced, etc.

Broadbent's gets my vote; their hams and sausage are outstanding. The sausage is a heart attack on a plate, it's so fatty. But it is just so fine. I plan on ordering ham hocks next mfor my beans and bean soup. They are super nice to deal with.

Forgot to mention; Broadbent also makes wonderful bacon. A little leaner than I like it but that's not them, that is the leaner pigs some genius decided to breed.

Ces, you can also make your own honeybaked ham with this recipe from the Sterns' Durgin-Park Cookbook. It's really good. DURGIN-PARK BAKED HAM 1 (5 to 6 pound) fully cooked ham 3/4 cup fresh orange juice 1/2 cup dry sherry 1 cup honey Whole cloves 1 cup packed dark brown sugar 2 Tbs. dry mustard Trim the skin from the ham, leaving a thin, even layer of fat. With a skewer, poke the ham all over at 2-inch intervals. Place the ham in a large resealable plastic bag, and place in a large shallow pan. Combine the orange juice, sherry, and honey; pour over the ham and seal the bag securely. Marinate in the refrigerator for three days, turning the ham every 12 hours. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Remove the ham from the bag, reserving the marinade. In a shallow roasting pan, with the ham fat side up, score the fat in a diamond design and stud with cloves. Insert a meat thermometer, making sure it does not touch bone. Pour all but a tablespoon of the marinade over the ham. Bake for 1 1/2 hours or until the meat thermometer registers 130 degrees. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, mustard and the tablespoon of the reserved marinade and brush the exposed portion of the ham. Cover with a tent of aluminum foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until meat thermometer registers 140. Remove from the oven and allow the meat to stand for 10 minutes; then thinly slice and serve. 10 to 12 servings.

I too love Broadbent's Sausage and Bacon, I usually buy the 72 patty offering and a 6 pack of bacon[my terminology].

Chisesi V.I.P. ham is excellent, but I don't know if it's just sold locally, or can be ordered . Here's their website that lists a toll-free number and e-mail: https://www.chisesibros.com

We very much enjoyed the ham we purchased for easter this year from Nueske's. It had a great applewood-smoked flavor. http://www.nueskes.com/

www.hamiam.com Linda Ellerbee likes it peppered. She mentions it in her book. I tried it last year and I like it too!
