I welcome any suggestions for roadfood to gourmet in the central coast of Maine, Rockport, Rockland, Camden, Union. Thank you.

The Brown Bag at 606 Main Street in Rockland (207 / 596-6372). You'll not find a better homemade breakfast in the Rockland / Rockport / Camden area.

There are lots of decent places to eat in Rockland and Camden, and one really outstanding one. If you want a truley fine-dining experience then go to Primo in Rockland, on the Owl's Head town line. It is superb. For more casual experiences I reccommend The Camden Deli for lunch (Rt. 1, downtown Camden), Cafe Miranda in Rockland, The Waterfront in Camden for outdoor, casual dining, and Amalfi in Rockland.

The Hartstone Inn in Camden is a fine B&B that saves a few tables for folks staying elsewhere. Their gourmet dinners are a fixed menu that we have thoroughly enjoyed on our annual trips to mid-coast Maine. For other meals we like Chez Michel in Lincolnville Beach for haddock or lobster dinners, Francine Bistro in Camden for light French bistro fare, and the lobster pounds down the peninsula south of Rockport. We always stay at the Maine Stay Inn in Camden and enjoy their breakfasts.

I'm not certain if you are just looking for roadfood or are also looking for some upscale places to eat. I ate at Marcel's in the Somoset Resort near Camden-Rockport a few years ago. Although a bit pricey, the chef had an innovative menu...the seafood was beautifully prepared..... tasted wonderful.......very good service and fab. seacoast views...a great place for a vacation or special ocasion splurge!

Don't forget Moody's Diner in Waldoboro (reviewed here), and the Freeport Cafe for breakfast.
I have also heard that previous brewpubs under the SeaDog label are being reopened in Camden and Rockport, maybe Topsam as well.
The new owners of the SeaDog label are the good folks at Shipyard brewing.
I can also recommend Gritty McDuff's in Freeport. see www.grittys.com for menu.
Maine Coffee Roasters has a nice outlet in Yarmouth on Route One north as well.

Adding new info to an old thread...as I am in this area now...the Brown Bag WAS outstanding and another treat was Lil' Piggy's BBQ also in Rockland, on Route 1 just north of the Brown Bag. Great smoked meats served with the sauce on the side. First rate cuts of meat, which the owner has brought in from Kansas...smoked to perfection. Totally unexpected treat in Lobsta' Land!!

The old saying is "Camden by sea, Rockland by smell." Not good smells either, but those days are over. Rockland is now a foodie mecca with Primo. Road food in central Maine must include Wasses Hot Dogs in downtown Rockland, Moody's A-1 Diner, Captain Hornblower for lobster rolls before jumping on the Maine State Ferry (Captain Hornblower is in the parking lot). For donuts, Willow Bake Shop in Rockland. If you like root beer, try to find Port Clyde Quencher Root Beer, named after the town near the Marshall Point Light. You can get it in the general store in Port Clyde, and at Wasses.

Warning If you don't want to feel old...don't read this!

I tried some of the Port Clyde Quencher Root Beer and it was fabulous. I tried to find where it was available by digging on-line, and came across an e-mail address for the guy who makes it. He was real nice and said it is only available in Mid_coast Maine, but also told me that he owns the company with his brother and they are 20 and 16 years of age. Who says the young folks don't know about good old fashioned foods!

I found the fact they were so young to be remarkable.

The Sundancer certainly enjoyed several stops at Youngs lobster Pound in Belfast, Maine. It is a huge stainless steel pound with several thousand lobsters in captivity. It is very spartan but beautiful in the same way. They steam on site and you can eat out on the dock with a great view of the bay. Potato salad, chips and soft drinks are available. They will let you BYOB which I brought cold beer. You can pick your own size lobster and they boil corn. Very reasonable. It is about 75 miles north of Portland on the coast.
