Major news from the world of Soup! Fri, 04/29/05 6:48 PM (permalink)
I am just reporting this news without comment. Hopefully, I can avoid stirring up a hornet's nest of controversy.

'Soup Nazi' to Launch Takeout Chain

Friday, April 29, 2005

TRENTON, N.J. - The brusque New York chef who was lampooned on "Seinfeld" as the "Soup Nazi" plans to open a chain of takeout soup stands across North America. But don't expect the authentically rude New York treatment.

Signs will be posted in each of "The Original Soup Man" franchises bearing chef Al Yeganeh's strict rules for ordering, such as "Have your money ready!" and "Move to the extreme left after ordering!" But a company spokesman said workers will be prohibited from shouting, "No soup for you!" at customers who disobey.

Yeganeh and his partners have signed deals for 123 outlets so far, with the first slated to open in the New Jersey town of Ridgewood this summer.

The group hopes to have 1,000 franchises at shopping mall food courts and airports in the United States and Canada within seven years. The partners also plan to sell refrigerated soup in markets.

"We really plan to take this whole concept international because Al is world renowned," said John Bello, chairman of Soup Kitchen International, the five-month-old venture named for Yeganeh's original storefront restaurant in New York City.

The storefront has been a tourist attraction since the 1995 "Seinfeld" episode in which Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer become frequent visitors to the Soup Nazi's takeout restaurant before angering him and having their soup orders abruptly cut off.

As in the "Seinfeld" episode, Yeganeh's real recipes are closely guarded secrets. He and his chefs have been working with experts at Rutgers University to adapt the recipes to preserve taste and freshness when making huge quantities of soup and shipping it across the continent, according to operations manager Linda Gavin.

"He is a typical high-strung chef," she said, and his manner was portrayed "pretty accurately" on "Seinfeld."

(So high-strung, in fact, Yeganeh hung up on an Associated Press reporter who had lined up an interview - before a single question was asked - then refused all further requests for an interview.)

The soup stands will bear Yeganeh's Original Soup Man logo with his photo. For $10, customers will get eight ounces of soup - the menu includes seafood bisque, chili and other more exotic soups - plus bread, a drink, fresh fruit and a chocolate.

Scott Ruddy, a Bronx sheet metal business owner who frequently bought soup from Yeganeh's storefront in Manhattan, said he is "100 percent confident" the takeout franchise he plans to open in September near Princeton University will succeed.

"It is bar none the best soup ever," he said.

Second that, jeepguy. Rudeness isn't considered a selling point by most Americans. Try this soup when you get the chance. This company won't be around long. Of course, I also never found that show amusing in any way. I had the distinct displeasure of dealing with the actual woman on whom the character of Elaine is based. I really don't think I'd try to establish a business based on all that bad baggage, but if someone brings me some of their soup, I'd be happy to try it--and happy to tell you all if it's really that good. After all, taking a position and never budging despite evidence to the contrary--isn't that what all those "Seinfeld" characters were all about? I would never want to be like "Elaine"!

I'd like to see a show of hands. Does anybody think a 10 dollar cup of soup would sell anywhere outside of NYC?

People will buy anything they "think" is "new". Alas, many perhaps are akin to, well, lets say "behaving in a stupid manner"...

Paying $10 for 8 oz. of soup would sure make bitching about $2 for a gallon of gas seem ridiculous.

Outrageous, simply outrageous, 10 bucks for 10ozs. Not in my world.

                        Dearfolk,
The soups at The Royal Cafe here in Athens will measure up to anything the so-called Soup Nazi can throw together. Besides, we can rest assured that chicken mull will not be among Mr. Yeganeh's offerings... nor Brunswick stew.... I would have no need to go there, nor any particular desire. Shyeesh.

First thought--- "There is one born every minute" ( future customers for this 'soup')

Then after more thought--- It is the same for a lot of folks...Buy the name !
Someone commented on another thread about the short-term investment possibilities of some franchises. Here's one that in my book would last a few months at best. It is almost criminal (IMHO)for this guy to take money from investors...Set up a "grand plan" and then let the name recognition burn-out shortly and bail out on the investors. Not only would I not buy the soup.. I wouldn't chance a penny in the future of this particular rip-off.

They could start with a decent website. They must have spent $50 on the current site.

                              To All,

Well here we go again. The soup from the "Soup Kithchen International", is the best soup that I ever bought. We have tried to make better and have come close, split pea, black bean. The lovely Laura and I went there on a sunny spring day and bought a lobster bisque. Yes we had to stand in line and yes we had to eat our soup in the courtyard of the "Theatrical Actors Equity Fund" building but it was well worth it. It is way better than eating my Mom's chicken noodle, this was the best soup I've ever had. The one to compare would be the Black Bean Soup at the Union Square Cafe. If you get a chance, take it.
