Paul,
When you have a moment, please post a progress report on your Mother's condition. We think of her often and hope all is going well.

For all of you that have posted your thoughts on this thread, I thank you and Mamaw Smith thanks you. It really brightened her day when she read so many thoughts of folks who do not know her.

I printed them off for her to read. Mamaw ain't so computer literate. I bought her one and it gathers dust.

She is healing slow and has quite a bit of pain. Her eyes, face and back are solid black from bruises. I think she is feeling some better cause each morning when I have coffee with her at 5:30AM and read the paper, she gives me a list of things she wants accomplished that particular day. Today it was pick the okra and slice it, pick a bushel of beans and break them, blanch them and freeze them, can 12 quarts of tomatoes, water her prize cockscomb that she received the "Al the Mayor" and other general duties. Sometimes it gets a little tiresome and then I remember with melancholy that I will not always have that privelege.

Somehow, I just read through this thread for the first time. So sorry to hear this news, but pray she'll be better soon.

For those who may have a interest: Mamaw Smith is doing somewhat better although she stumbled this morning and scared hell out of me. I can tell she is improving as she has instructions for me to continue to can tomatoes, break beans, gather okra, water plants and etc.

Thanks to all who have expressed kind wishes.

Paul, I know you cherish every minute you have with Mamaw, and how wonderful to have beans and okra to pick, tomatoes to can, and someone you love to share coffee with each morning. When the sun gets hot and the picking gets tiresome and you don't think you ever want to see another tomato again, take a deep breath and praise the Good Master you still have the ability to do things to help Mamaw and make her feel secure and happy. God Bless You, Paul, and get well wishes to your dear Mamaw!

I am going home to SC to visit my family in 2 weeks while my dear husband stays home with the dogs, so I will be out in the hot sun picking tomatoes too, I hope, if there are any left! But it will be so sweet to be there with my family eating SC tomatoes again. Mine here in Washington aren't even ripe yet. I miss that good old Southern sunshine.
