Manhattan Mexican

As I mentioned on "Where Should I Eat?", we have a German teen visiting us next week. A RFer suggested Mexican food for him because there is little good Mex food in Europe. I thought, good idea, then I thought, is there any good Mex food in Manhattan either?

Any suggestions (esp. south of 59th St if possible)?

Though it is primarilly populated with Puerto Ricans, Cubans and Jamaiicans, I can only imagine that Spanish Harlem has some good selections. This seems like a good time to pick up The Village Voice and check out their food section and accompanying advertisements.

One odd story was that I had some friends who lived right near the Metro North station in Harlem. Just looking around, I thought that we would find some good eating. They insisted that we go into mid-town. Bad idea, poor food and commercial chips. I think their main concern was that the drinks were good.
Years later, this still sticks in the back of my mind as a missed opportunity.

There's a small 'chain' of Cuban restaurants that do a terrific lunch business. They are called 'Sophie's Cuban' and there are places all over town. I go to the one on New Street and have always enjoyed it.

There's great Mexican food in Manhattan (along with some really bad).

BLOCKHEAD'S serves great, fresh burritos. Very cheap, very casual. Several locations.

ROSA MEXICANO is upscale and expensive, but has top notch food. 1st ave/58th location only, the newer locations are still working the kinks out.

GONZALEZ Y GONZALEZ on Bway near Bleeker is a big hit with the NYU crowd. Loud and fun. The food is so-so, but I'm sure your teen friend would love the atmosphere.

DOS CAMINOS (2 locations) is probably the hippest Mexican place around right now. Huge with the after-work crowd. Food is surprisingly good.

You can always check out www.menupages.com and search any particular neigborhood.

there's Maryanne's on 2nd ave and 5th st in NYC - very serviceable food, great salsa...The Hat(El Sombrero) on Stanton St and Ludlow is on the lower east side - the food is good, portions are generous, the atmosphere used to be awesome in the 80's..maybe it's not so hip now, but dependable...

Good! I just remembered Maryanne's on 8th Ave., if it is still there. And Rocking Horse Cafe, too if it is still there. Rosa Mexicana is fun, too.

My suggestion is Panchito's at 105 Macdougal St. I always liked it when I lived in the area. Great Mole. Doatsie
