Maple Leaf Dogs Live!

I say this because an old thread re-appeared. I sold them here last summer in Rochester,NH. They are still produced by the same family (actually by Kayem under contract ) as they have been for the past 62 years.

The contact number and person are valid-Steve Davidovich at 978-740-9790. I last saw him in October driving a large SUV stuffed with hot dogs and golf clubs. Maple Leaf of Canada is not where the dogs come from. I sold 7/1 pork beef combo...

They are available locally, though pricy, at the Market Basket supermarket at $4.49 per Lb and also (real local) Arthur's Market.

I've gotta try one. I believe they have them at New England Hot Dog Company in Freehold, which is about a 40 minute drive. I know they're made by Kayem, which is a good dog. Is Maple Leaf similar to Kayem? Only thing I wouldn't like is having a dog prepared on a roller grill like they do at NE Hot Dog Company. I think I'll make a special request for mine to be put on a regular grill or griddle. Roller grills are for movie theatres and 7-11's.

We're talking real fine distinctions here. Kayem is damn good. That said, before I got the Maple Leafs I was selling Schonland's which is another Kayem product but with more garlic....I would regard the Maple Leaf as midway between the two for garlic but with some other subtle changes in the spice mix that makes it my choice.  So it's probably going to be a highly personal judgement call.

Thanks for your reply. Now I know that there are separate recipes. A lot of companies sell dogs under different labels, but use the same recipe. Kayem is not available here in Jersey, but I have enjoyed them in Maine and Connecticut. I also believe that there is a dog that is popular in Vermont that was made there but is now made by Kayem.

John the Vermont dog is McKenzie. I've tried them and they are a good natural casing dog. More smoky flavor and lighter on the spice than the Kayen Olde Tyme. I visited the mustang grill last summer and catnhatnh put out a really good dog. I had mine with mustard and onion, the girlfriend had chili and cheese. The Maple Leaf is a great product. I think it is milder than the Kayem, but I think the main difference is the spice profile. Less garlic more pepper. It's worth checking out.
Catnhatnh also makes a nice crispy order of fries.

Thank you. I will check out the Maple Leaf dog at NE Hot Dog Company if they still carry this brand.
