I noticed one item on Mark Twain's list that I have no idea what it is: "Prairie liens, from Illinois". I am old, but I guess not old enough to have heard of them. Does anybody have any idea what he might be talking about?

6star "Prairie liens, from Illinois". I am old, but I guess not old enough to have heard of them. Does anybody have any idea what he might be talking about? I suspect it has something to do with either a liaison or binding if taken from a food context, but a liaison of what...good question I'd also be interested in any insight to its origin.

Very interesting list, but I believe I will pass on the possum and the 'coon.

Did the ol' Google search on "prairie liens"; they appear to be some sort of wild fowl, perhaps similar to the grouse, and apparently, at least according to Mr. Twain, who I have no reason to doubt, they are indigenous to my home state. Couldn't be prouder! Buddy

You folks might be interested in a 2010 publication: Twain's Feast, Andrew Beahrs, Penguin. In about 300 pages the author tells a wonderful tale of his own search for the products and dishes on Twain's 1879 list of the foods he most missed while traveling in Europe. Cheers, John
