Martha's Vineyard Sat, 09/18/04 10:38 PM (permalink)
A "Where Should I Eat" forum search has seen this type of inquiry posted for both the Cape and Nantucket but not for Martha's Vineyard where I will be the month's end into October (or "Bach-tober" as the Lilly Pulitzer whale pant-wearing island residents call it). Egads!

The Black Dog in Vineyard Haven is a must! Unfortunately, many of the restaurants will be closed by the end of October. Just take a ride out to Oak Bluffs and Edgartown, geeze, the Vineyard is not all that big. You're pretty much gonna be stuck eating wherever you find an open place. Sorry, i95. At any rate, I think The Black Dog will be open.

Yup. Familiar with the Black Dog.

I was hoping, however, to find some either less tourist-magnet
or lesser known eateries. Thanks, though, lleechef. Anyone else?

I'm an off-season Vineyarder. It's true that there aren't as many places open when summer ends, but until Columbus Day you'll find lots to choose from. Afterward, you can still go to:

        The ArtCliff Diner (VH)
        Seasons (OB)
        The Newes (Edgartown)
The grill at the Harborside Hotel - best burgers on the island
        Breakfast at Linda Jean's (OB)
        Brunch at Lola's (OB)

              **Giant Disclaimer**

I haven't set foot on the island since 1980!

However, having said that, I used to wash dishes at Giordano's which is in Oak Bluffs, right across from the Carousel. There were three parts to it -- a restaurant, a pizzaria, and a clam fry. The restaurant served good, basic Italian-American fare. Everything was home-made. My particular faves were the Clam Chowder and the Eggplant Parmigian. The Bread Pudding was also made from scratch every day. The pizza was ok but not my favorite.

Their Clam Fry was great. I loved the Fried Scallops, which were fresh, never over-cooked and not bitter the way scallops can be. Also, the French Fries were to die for. Made from fresh potatoes every day -- never frozen -- and twice-cooked. This I know for sure because I peeled those dang potatoes.

Of course, a lot can change in 24 years. I don't even know if they're still in business. Back then at least, they had limited hours through October. YMMV.

I also just want to say that at least in 1980, you could not walk into a restaurant on the island, order up some Onion Rings and not get fresh, made-from-scratch, Onion Rings. That's just how it was done on the island. My kind of island!

Alas, I'm sure that's no longer the case now. . .

There is a little fish fry shack in Memensha - The Bite. There is a big picture of Clinton & family there so the secret must be out. Their fried clams and scallops are perfect, though don't know if they are open off-season. their # is (508)-645-9239 if you want to check.
